Position Overview
This position is accountable for laboratory testing, testing quality control, and reporting test results for aggregates, hot-mix asphalt (HMA), Portland cement concrete (PCC), and soils used on state and local agency roadway and structure construction projects. This position is also responsible for maintaining laboratory and field testing equipment and may perform inspections of construction sites and private laboratories.
Essential Functions
- Organizes and prioritizes testing of samples submitted to the laboratory.
- Ensures the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of testing.
- Ensures testing is performed according to Department standards.
- Ensures the maintenance, repair, and calibration of laboratory and field-testing equipment.
- Ensures there are adequate laboratory supplies, equipment repair parts, and field sample containers available.
- Maintains an inventory of testing equipment assigned to field personnel.
- Trains, motivates and evaluates subordinates.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of math to include algebra.
- Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with co-workers.
- Two years supervisory experience.

- Valid drivers' license.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and traverse stairs and ladders.
- Pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol screening are required.
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Some overtime, night work, shift differential, and overnight travel.
- Minimum 4 years' experience with roadway and structure construction materials testing.
- Possess IDOT QC/QA certification in Aggregates and HMA Level I.
- Ability to successfully obtain IDOT QC/QA certification in PCC Level I and HMA Level II within 18 months of start date.
