GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Scientist-Microbiology will work at the IIT Institute for Food Safety and Health
IFSH)’s joint Proficiency Testing program with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), located at the Moffett Campus of IIT. The joint IFSH-FDA Proficiency Testing program is ISO17043 accredited. Under minimal supervision, the Scientist responds to complex scientific inquiries and resolves method / instrument issues. The Scientist also takes a lead role in drafting science papers / presentations.
The salary range for this role is $65,000 – $70,000 and is commensurate with experience.

Special Schedule Requirements Some weekend work required Qualifications Education & Experience M.S. degree in Food Science or related field with 3 or more years related accomplishments, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge & Skills Works with minimal supervision, responds to complex queries and is pro-active in seeking a solution. Has good software skills in Word and Excel plus very good attention to detail in conducting and documenting scientific notebooks and papers. The Scientist Microbiology will work in an ISO17043 accredited laboratory. SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY No budget authority or supervision of staff.
May direct up to 3 students on small projects. Physical Environment and Requirements
- 75% of time in lab and the balance in an office environment.
- May lift up to 10 lbs. on occasion and will do repetitive motions (up to 20% of time) in data entry and manipulating instruments. N / A Key Responsibilities Key Responsibility Contributes to the Proficiency Testing Microbiology programs by performing lab tests and analysis in accordance with required specifications, established procedures and customer service standards and analysis to provide accurate research data. Percentage Of Time 20 Key Responsibility Conducts analysis in a timely, accurate and cost effective manner. Manages lab processes, supplies and equipment to achieve maximum output. Percentage Of Time 20 Key Responsibility Assists in developing, documenting, updating and maintaining approved procedures for assigned Proficiency Testing Microbiology projects. Plans, schedules and prioritizes project activities. Percentage Of Time 20 Key Responsibility Accurately judges time required to complete tasks, respects time lines and priorities of others. Works with industry partners and participates in cross-functional teams to drive project results. Percentage Of Time 20 Key Responsibility Develops client / grant / internal proposals for funding. Develops internal status, updates, reports, and scientific presentations / publications. Percentage Of Time 10 Key Responsibility Directs others / students with small projects and projects of limited focus. Recommends ideas to enhance department effectiveness. Ensures that all safety procedures are in effect and tracked. Communicates to encourage teamwork and a pro-active approach to meet customer needs. Performs other duties as assigned.
