POSITION SUMMARY

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services, Bureau of Property Management is seeking to hire an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer at the Chicago Medical Center in Chicago. This lead worker position manages, plans, coordinates, and directs all phases of the physical plant operations for the Chicago Medical Center, and other CMS owned and operated facilities in the Northern Region. In addition, this position prepares specifications for equipment and supplies and works with outside contracts to obtain estimates for work to be performed, as well as representing CMS building management to resolve problems and any controversies relating to building services, furnishings, fixtures, and improvement projects. The ideal candidate possesses strong communication, organization, and engineer trade skills. We invite all qualified candidates to apply! 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Under general direction, and with guidance from the Chief Stationary Engineer, manages, plans, coordinates, and directs all phases of the physical plant operations for the Chicago Medical Center, and other CMS owned and operated facilities in the Northern Region.
  • Serves as the Assistant Stationary Chief.
  • Consults with craftsmen and contractors utilized to provide repair and maintenance at CMS operated facilities within the Northern & Chicago Region.
  • Serves as designated lead worker for stationary engineers and other craftsmen.
  • Confers with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Requires five years’ experience in the operation of a commercial or institutional power plant or as a skilled craftsman in the mechanical or building trades.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefers extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods used in the operation of high and low-pressure coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their appurtenances.
  • Prefers four (4) years professional experience directing the work of employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and building systems.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge of steam engineering, electrical generation, and distribution.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge of the operation of electrical generating equipment.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge of public health regulations and building codes.
  • Prefers thorough knowledge of the underlying principles of water chemical treatment for boilers plus heating and cooling systems.
  • Prefers thorough knowledge of diagnosing problems in mechanical, electrical, heating and air condition systems, and recognizing potentially dangerous situations and determining the appropriate emergency responses.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge in the use of hand and power tools and equipment used for maintaining Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge of preparing and maintaining reports.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. This also requires the ability to work after hours in an emergency.
  • Requires a Stationary Engineer license certificate for the City of Chicago.
  • Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules.
  • Requires the ability to perform the physical functions and tasks associated with engineering including but not limited to overhead work, ladder climbing, squatting, kneeling, bending, walking, and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Requires ability to lift 20 lbs. constantly, up to 50 lbs. frequently, and push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally (with assistance), and lifts over 100 lbs. occasionally (with assistance) to perform repairs and in the maintenance of facilities.
  • Requires the ability to read and understand mechanical blueprints/floorplans and technical equipment manuals.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to various sites/facilities in the performance of duties.
  • Requires the ability to use agency technology/equipment (i.e., mobile phone, laptop, etc.) properly in accordance with information security awareness policies and confidentiality guidelines.
