Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a motivated plumber at Hill Correctional Center. The successful candidate will perform journey level plumbing work. In addition, the successful candidate will supervise and conduct on-the-job training to help individuals in custody develop plumbing trade skills. Essential Functions

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains hot and cold-water lines, sewage pipes, traps, and appliances, i.e., water closets, lavatories, urinals, showers, and all fittings.
  • Instructs individuals in custody workers in basic plumber tasks assigning work according to their qualifications.
  • Cuts and threads pipe using stock and dyes, power-threading machines, power saws, wrenches, and pipe machines, use drain snakes and/or drain jetters.
  • Solder/repair lead joints, uses a blow torch, directs trenching and backfilling operations for the repair and service of water/sewer lines and the clearing of blockages in sanitary/sewer lines.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires possession of a current valid plumber’s license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  • Requires the possession of a valid certificate as a Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) or the acquisition of the certificate within the probationary period of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience with the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of residential, commercial, and new construction plumbing trade.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of previous supervisor/foreman experience in the plumbing trade.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience and knowledge of laws relating to sanitation and public health.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience reading blueprints to complete jobs from start to finish, estimating jobs, and ordering supplies.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience installing and repairing wall mounted fixtures in commercial, and new construction in hotels, penal institutions, jails, restaurants, nursing homes, or hospitals.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience in technical details of the parts and workings of the water table.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience installing water closets (aka toilets), lavatories (aka sinks) that meet ADA requirements.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience performing repairs on sewer pipes, water pipes, storm drainpipes, gas lines.

  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
