Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as a Corrections Clerk II to work at Logan Correctional Center in the Mailroom. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has excellent organizational skills, shows great attention to detail,  and has strong interpersonal skills. This position supervises mailroom activities and directs daily mailroom functions. This position processes incoming and outgoing mail for individuals in custody and serves as lead worker to mailroom staff. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Monitors Mailroom processing for receiving and outgoing of mail.
  • Implements all mail rules and regulations set forth by both Federal and Department of Corrections.
  • Calls individuals in custody to assigned area to verify legal mail from attorneys, judges, etc..
  • Monitors receipts of newspapers, magazines, and incoming mail to ensure it is sorted by living unit and then delivered to the 3pm-11pm shift roll call room for distribution by the Unit Control Officer.
  • Serves as lead worker.
  • Monitors processing of money orders received in the mail to ensure they are recorded, noted, and sent to the Trust Fund Office.
  • Receives and inspects mail received weighing up to 50 lbs..
  • Exercises responsibility for the preparation of a variety of important records and reports pertaining to individuals in custody’s personal property.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope to the duties required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school.
  • Requires two (2) years of clerical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience preparing and reviewing files for accuracy.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining a complex filing system.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience gathering data and preparing reports.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working in a mail room.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining and keeping records.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in a correctional facility.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience implementing safety and security procedures.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience using Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel or similar programs.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in report writing using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccines and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
