Position Overview

The Corrections Maintenance Craftsman at Menard Correctional Center is responsible for performing various welding duties including fabrication of barriers, fencing repair, and performing other necessary security improvements to facility buildings and surrounding grounds and structures, as well as general repair and maintenance of the vehicle fleet.  Menard Correctional Center is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual with welding and maintenance experience to serve in the role.  We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.  If interested in this position, please apply according to the instructions on the job posting. 

Essential Functions

  • Monitors individuals in custody in performing basic maintenance duties on facility buildings and equipment.
  • Performs maintenance work at journeyman level in repair of facility buildings, equipment, and machinery.
  • Maintains count of tools and equipment utilized during shift as well as monitoring and supervising individual in custody workers.
  • Direct or assists in loading and transporting supplies and equipment between institutions or between the institution and local facilities.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman in one of the maintenance or automotive repair trades.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience performing maintenance work at a journeyman level.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with welding/fabrication and operating a MIG gas metal arc welding (GMAW) welder.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience employing proper methods and procedures of laying brick.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with heating and cooling repair and installation.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience mixing, pouring, and finishing cement.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience making arithmetical computations and bulk estimates of materials needed.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from plans, simple drawings and/or sketches.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining inventory and accountability of tools.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
