Duties & Responsibilities:
- Planning, organizing, directing, staffing, coordinating and reporting activities of subordinate staff assigned to a police bureau/unit to assure compliance with Written Directives and effectively meet the mission and vision of the Division of Public Safety.
- Develop, supervise/direct and evaluate activities for assigned bureaus/units to meet University community policing needs as reflected in departmental goals and objectives.
- Supervise the assignment and briefing of police officers at large events or emergencies.
- Observe, supervise and instruct subordinate officers.
- Participate in resolving more difficult police problems and incidents and instruct subordinate officers in methods to be followed during investigation and response to complex, difficult and unusual incidents.
- Provide effective emergency response and take charge of incident control at major incidents.
- Review, approve and delegate the work of assigned subordinate police sergeants.
- Evaluate the performance of subordinate employees and identify and meet training needs if appropriate for the entire unit.
- Ensure that scheduling of subordinate Police Sergeants and Officers provides appropriate staffing levels.
- Make periodic, unscheduled inspections of work group to assure compliance with pertinent written directives applicable to assignment.
- Manage personnel matters involving members of the activity group.
- Complete activity summary reports for assigned work groups.
- Conduct program analysis of assigned activity groups and provide budgeting input.
- Complete staff studies and program development/coordination of activities pertinent to the activity group or as assigned by superior.
- Serve as a member of Division’s Executive Leadership Team providing input to Chief of Police regarding Division’s strategic planning, administrative oversight, budgeting and appropriate personnel issues.
- Command special event details such as sporting events, concerts, parades, etc.
- Serve as department representative in structured Unified Commands for major special events and critical incidents.
- Assist in the preparation and management of the Division’s budget.
- Represent the Division during scheduled and unscheduled absences of the Deputy Chief of Police and the Chief of Police.
- Act as a campus security authority, as defined by the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, to include completing training and the timely reporting to the University of Illinois Police allegations of Clery Act crimes.
- Act as a responsible employee under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 which includes the timely reporting of incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct to the University of Illinois’ Title IX coordinator.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
