Duties & Responsibilities
- Learn to provide standard paramedical technical assistance, nursing care and instruction in a professional and courteous manner:
• Restrain patients as requested and perform basic paramedical technical procedures under direction of a veterinarian.
• Administer and dispense medication, fluids, etc., under the direction of a veterinarian.
• Assist veterinary staff and students with patient treatments.
• Collect and submit blood, urine, fecal, milk and other biological samples. Inoculate prepackaged media.
• Remove and apply bandages as directed.
• Prepare animals and equipment, set up, assist, demonstrate, and clean up after common procedures, such as ultrasonography, breeding soundness evaluations, jugular catheterization, etc.
• Perform a variety of in-house diagnostic tests.
• Recognize and report emergency conditions. - Learn the patient admission and discharge, client communications and record keeping processes:
• Assist in the admission and discharge of patients.
• Enter clinical signs, treatments, and other information in the medical records in the Health Information System under direction of a staff veterinarian.
• Assist with follow up client communications regarding the patient’s progress after being discharged.
• Enter supplies used and procedures performed on patients into Health Information System. - • Clean, supply and maintain treatment rooms, exam areas, laboratories, surgical areas, storerooms, and rounds areas as per regulatory requirements.
• Operate, clean, monitor and provide routine maintenance of equipment and instruments used within the section such as ultrasound, endoscopy, steam, H2O2, and ethylene oxide sterilizers.
• Inventory and maintain drugs and other supplies. - Learn to teach professional students
• May assist the LAC staff in setting up laboratories and to assist students in laboratory procedures.
• May assist in the training of veterinary technician students.
• Perform other duties as assigned
