Clinical Veterinarian- Nonhuman Primate (NHP) Emphasis
This role involves providing essential veterinary care for non-human primates utilized in research and breeding at a CDC quarantine facility. The primary responsibilities will entail specialized work related to the health, maintenance, and management of non-human primates. This position necessitates clinical and surgical veterinary expertise, proficiency in maintaining clinical records and databases, strong organizational skills, and a passion for working in a fast-paced environment.
Our objective is to ensure the optimal veterinary healthcare for nonhuman primates (NHP) while supporting our breeding programs.
Guarantee compliance with federal regulations from the USDA, DEA, NIH, and AAALAC to ensure the facility's adherence to standards.
Support the health and well-being of the breeding colonies.
Responsibilites:
- Execute preventative medicine measures including, but not limited to: quarantine protocols, dental procedures, evaluation of health records, analysis of physiological blood values of colony animals, and modification of clinical treatments.
- Develop and implement plans for preventative medicine, including reviewing current plans and modifying protocols based on clinical outcomes.
- Participate in animal health maintenance through surveillance of colony animal health alongside other veterinary clinical staff and colony personnel, infectious disease testing, routine physical examinations, and bio-sample analysis for colony animals, as well as dental health assessments.
- Provide care for sick or injured animals, including follow-up care and release from clinical treatment.
- Maintain continuous surveillance for clinical signs of disease or injury.
- Perform radiology, ultrasound, and surgical procedures.
- Provide care for pregnant and neonatal NHPs.
- Determine and direct the use of anesthetic and analgesic agents.
- Administer sedation and anesthesia using controlled drugs.
- Provide guidance to surgical support staff regarding instrumentation, sanitation practices, and maintenance of surgical suits.
- Deliver patient per-operative anesthesia and monitoring as required.
- Provide and oversee post-operative intensive care, including the administration of sedatives, analgesics, and antibiotics.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge through required training.
- Adhere to all USDA, PHS, AAALAC policies and procedures.
- Directly monitor clinical cases.
- Supervise veterinary clinical staff members as needed.
Requirements
- Hold a DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school and possess a minimum of 1 year experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
- Must obtain USDA accreditation within 6 months of employment.
- Ability to obtain DEA registration.
- Demonstrate veterinary clinical expertise with a variety of animals, with NHP experience being a requirement.
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of Programs.
- Preferred experience conducting research in a USDA or FDA regulated environment.
- Current and relevant working knowledge of regulations governing the use of animals in teaching and research (e.g., USDA, PHS, AAALAC) is desirable.
Desired Experience
- Exhibit clinical proficiency with nonhuman primates and possess a high level of technical skills specific to primates.
- Hold Board Certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
- Experience providing hands-on technical training.
- Prior supervisory experience.
