Position Title: Special Education Specialist
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Reports to: Principal
Position Description:
· Oversee and direct special education services for all students.
· Evaluate special education programs to ensure that objectives for student education are met. Use a variety of techniques to tailor the educational process to particular students.
· Assist teachers in planning and delivering instruction using the most efficient and effective methodology for the students assigned.
· Coordinate the selection of curriculum for special education students aligned with the school’s core curriculum.
· Coordinate and facilitate parent advisory groups and committees related to special education.
· Implement the approved course curriculum and train teachers to use the curriculum.
· Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and professionals to develop individual educational plans designed to promote each student’s educational, physical, and social development.
· Meet with parents/guardians to discuss their children’s progress, and to determine their priorities for their children.
· Support children’s emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and a positive self-image.
· Monitor teachers and teacher assistants to ensure that they adhere to inclusive special education program requirements.
· Develop annual budget for special education program.
· Consult with other school staff as necessary to complete the functions of the position.
· Complete written reports and assigned administrative tasks related to these functions, such as student’s progress in educational, physical and social development.
· Utilize preventive discipline methodology with assigned students.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Imagine Schools Six Measures of Excellence in the execution of duties.
- Model positive character virtues and habits. Assist students in developing positive moral and performance character attributes.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Principal/School Leader.
· Education: Bachelors degree and Masters in Special Education.
· Licenses & Certifications: State certification and endorsement in assigned area.
· Experience: 3-5 years successful teaching experience in special education.
Provides support and monitors the services and progress for our ESE Students.
Meet with parents and/or guardians and classroom teachers to discuss their children’s progress, and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs.
Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP.
· Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
· Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
· Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
· Attends meetings and works cooperatively with the IEP team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
· Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
· Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources including technology.
· Serves as primary contact for the ESE parent.
· Completes all district and state reporting requirements.

· Knowledge, Ability & Skills: Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills; ability to perform independently. Ability to remain pleasant and helpful under sometimes-stressful circumstances. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and multitask when necessary. Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations and statutes and theory and practice of student learning styles. Ability to communicate cooperatively and constructively with other staff, students and parents in a multi-cultural environment.
