The Position
Powder Mill Trainee
Job Summary
The Lompoc facility has eight compressors installed with a total rating of 2.6 MW - by far one of the biggest energy users at the plant. The compressors, while on the same network, are old and inefficient, and pose reliability problems for the site. We have a big opportunity and want to invest in improving our compressed air system at the plant, to reduce energy costs, increase reliability, and lower our CO2 footprint.
Perform air audits to identify opportunities for energy reduction.
Map the air system and install flow meters and pressure transmitters in key areas to understand peak demands, baseline requirements, and potential inefficiencies.
With plants having idle time, define the best way to isolate areas and reduce energy consumption by automating processes during idle times. (One of the
biggest opportunities).
Evaluate performance of the current plant compressed air system and develop proposals to improve it.
Work with suppliers to identify potential solutions. Perform a cost-benefit analysis of proposed solutions, focusing on energy savings, reliability improvements, and reduced downtime.
Reduce average consumption from 2.1 MW to 1.5 MW ~ $500k and CO2 Reduction; also better match energy consumption with the demand profile.
Project Learning Objectives:
Technical Skills - Learn about mechanical and electrical systems, compressed air networks. PLC, networks, and instrumentation.
Analytical Skills - Capture data, learn how to evaluate and analyze compressor performance.
Project Management Skills- define project scope, engage stakeholders, work with vendors, analyze data, recommend solutions, and manage the execution.
Sustainability focus and understanding of plants’ environmental impacts, and adopting a mindset to find sustainable solutions and energy efficiency opportunities.
Wage: $70,000 - $90,000
Education and/or Experience:
- Mechanical or Electrical Engineer
- Newly graduated from college
- Self starter
- Able to work without constant supervision
- Communicates well
