JOB TITLE: Blast Foreman
REPORTS TO: Superintendent/Project Manager
Summary of position: Responsible for all Blast related operations for a designated job or jobs. Maintain a high quality of workmanship while supervising all blasters, deck hands and blast pot tenders. Work with other Foremen and shipyard employees to coordinate the job. Inspect all blasting equipment for proper working conditions. Perform repairs to equipment hoses and lines.
Essential Job Requirements: Perform both physical and organizational duties under leadership of Superintendents/Project Managers. Communicate effectively with inspectors and owner representatives and attend inspections of blast work. Organize, supervise, lead and train employees to complete projects within established guidelines and timeframe. Supervise blast crew in all essential job requirements. Inspect preparation of blasted surfaces and have blasters correct any area not up to standard. Set blasting equipment in place correctly and remove upon completion of blast operation. Submit crewmembers? timesheets into payroll by deadline. Often required to make decisions. All the above shall be performed in a safe and timely manner. May be required to perform additional duties as deemed necessary by the Superintendent/Project Manager.
Required Education: Must read and write with understanding.
Required Experience: Formal or informal on the job training and 3 years experience in the Marine Industry.
Required Skills: Must be able to read and interpret documents such as job specifications, maintenance manuals, safety manuals, etc. Must be able to calculate and order grit, fuel supplies and other material for the blasting operation. Required to direct employees in a productive and professional manner.
Physical Requirements: Stamina required; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and crawl. Required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip or handle; regularly required to lift and/or move heavy objects. Required to use vision for up close, distant, and peripheral inspections.
Aptitude Requirements: Must be able to do simple to complex math. Must be able to carry out written or verbal instructions. Must be able to problem solve, organize, and prioritize work.
Equipment Used: Blast Pot/ Hopper, after cooler, dehumidifiers, dust collectors, vacuums, forklifts, electrical disconnects and transformers, compressors.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Must direct large numbers of employees at one time in a productive and safe manner. Directly supervises employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization?s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, or making recommendation for hiring, training, planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, dusty conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, hazardous machinery, confined spaces, precarious places, proximity to other employees. To avoid injury, safety clothing required along with safety devices to protect eyes, mouth, or hearing. Overtime or shift work involved most of the time. Travel often required.
