The Assistant Director of Student Life is a member of the student development and engagement division reporting directly to the Director of Student Life. In partnership with the director, the Assistant Director is responsible for the development of a comprehensive student activities, involvement, and student leadership development program. The position will, in conjunction with the Director of Student Life support university accredited clubs and organizations, university traditions, New Student Orientation, the Student Leadership hiring process, and the organization and publication of student programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Coordination of Retention and Engagement Efforts
- In conjunction with the Director of Student Life develop and implement short and long-range strategic plans that promote a vibrant campus community;
- Develop, in conjunction with the Director of Student Life and the Office of Residence Life and Housing, best practices for assessing the quality of the overall undergraduate student experience and implement strategies to increase student satisfaction and retention;
- Serve as a co-coordinator of the New Student Orientation;
- Support the civic engagement, holistic development, and leadership of a diverse student population by promoting involvement in student organizations and educational program opportunities.
Departmental Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of highly publicized, large-scale University programs sponsored by the Office of Student Involvement, including, but not limited to, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Spirit Weeks, University Traditions, and Block Party, to ensure quality of the student experience and efficiency of planning;
- Maintain effective working relationships with other campus partners (e.g. Enrollment Management, University Communications, Office of Technology Services, Facilities, Campus Safety and Protection, Dining Services, and other departments within Student Development and Engagement, etc.);
- Serve as a resource to advisors and executive board members of student organizations, Student Government Association, and Class Councils;
- Advise the Student Government Association Programming Council;
- Maintain Student Life social media channels, IU Campus Connect app, and clubs and organization advertisements in communal areas throughout campus.
Supervision of Staff
- Manage, in conjunction with the Director of Student Life and Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing, recruitment, selection, training, and development of Campus Life Leadership team (Resident Assistants, Program Assistants, Commuter Assistants, New Student Orientation Chairs, Orientation Leaders, Diversity Assistants);
- Supervise, in conjunction with the Director of Student Life, one Commuter Assistant, two Programming Assistants, and one Graduate Assistant (paraprofessional student staff members).
General Responsibilities
- Maintain awareness of University resources for helping students with academic, career, and personal concerns and to make referrals when appropriate;
- Serve on University committees, task forces, and projects as designated;
- Other duties as assigned.

- Bachelor's degree required
- Ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of experience in campus activities and programming, preferably in a college/university setting.
- Individual should possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with time-sensitive projects, successfully multitask, work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to remain pleasant and professional.
- Evening and weekend work required.
Preferred Requirements:
- Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, or related field preferred
