Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (Grand Rapids, MI) is seeking a Director of Liturgical Music.
The Director of Liturgical Music is responsible for overseeing the parish music program as the principal organist, pianist, and choir director, ensuring programming that enhances the Mass and encourages congregants to participate through song. The Director is an integral part of the pastoral staff. The Director will conduct themselves according to the highest professional standards and most importantly, minister with the heart of a servant.
What You’ll Be Doing:
· The Director will be the principal Pianist, Organist, and Choir Director for weekend liturgies, school Masses, and other holy days/celebrations.
· Preparing music selections, building and maintaining repertoire in both traditional and contemporary traditions in according to Roman Catholic liturgy.
· Recruit, prepare, and train Parish music groups and volunteers that include Adult, Bell, Children and Resurrection choirs.
· Developing and supporting adult and youth cantors and parish member instrumentalists.
· Collaborating with bilingual Burmese Community Leader for monthly Burmese meditation song.
· Collaborating with the elementary school music teacher to schedule youth cantors, school liturgy prep, school concerts/musicals and graduation.
· Directing and hiring professional string and brass players for high feast celebrations, such as Christmas, Easter, Christ the King and Pentecost.
· Preparing worship aids and supplements for congregational singing as needed.
· Ensuring proper copyright usage for all printed materials.
· Overseeing Wedding music that includes meeting with couples, planning music, reviewing wedding programs and hiring cantors/musicians as needed.
· Overseeing Funeral Mass music, ministering to families of the deceased, meeting to plan music, readings and liturgy details. Hire qualified cantors as needed. Rehearse the Resurrection choir.
· Preparing, reviewing, and maintaining the music budget.
· Maintaining musical instruments and sound equipment.
What You Bring to the Role:
· Bachelor in Music or Liturgical Music or equivalent experience
· Skilled pianist, organist, and choir director/vocal coach
· Passion for engaging quality congregational singing
· Ability to work effectively with other employees and volunteers
· Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
· Proficient in MS O365, Microsoft Publisher, Gmail and Google Calendar
· Knowledge of the Catholic liturgy and directing sacred music in the Catholic Church is preferred.
