Job Summary: Obtains patient blood samples, including properly identifying the patient, observing proper procedures in obtain blood samples and returning the samples to the laboratory for testing. Ensures that proper documentation is available for each test performed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
Verify test requisition(s) or computer label to ensure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. Brings discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel for correction.
Verifies positive patient identification.
Collects blood samples using aseptic technique.
Performs venipuncture and fingersticks using the aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures. Observes hospital isolation procedures.
Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.
Blood samples are properly labeled with the patient’s name and label, the time/date of the draw and the phlebotomist’s initials.
Maintains daily log of collections performed.
Samples requested “STAT” will be drawn as soon as possible and returned to the laboratory.
Answers the telephone quickly and courteously. Responds to the questions accurately and obtains needed information for the caller promptly and politely.
Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test order by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, clinic, or reference laboratory. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the Lab Manager aware of unresolved orders.
Input lab orders into LIS.
Performs other duties as assigned that are not a part of the usual job description.
Performs phlebotomies on nursing home patients upon orders from the nursing home or assigned (authorized) provider.
Maintains a log of all scheduled and completed nursing home draws.
Delivers completed test results to the appropriate destinations.
Answers questions when possible or will obtain answers to client questions and gets back with the client.
When problems arise with clients, works with Reference Lab and client to solve the problem.
Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory area.
Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs.
Attends regular departmental staff meetings and in-service trainings.
Observes laboratory policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Keeps work area neat and clean.
Reports unresolved clinic problems to the Mobile Operations Manager.
Verifies that diagnosis is appropriate for test ordered.
Maintains tally records of work performed for workload and statistical reporting purposes. May be assigned responsibility for monthly collation of tallies.

Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and CLIA regulations.

Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, facilities and staff.
Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.
Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
Regulatory Requirements:
· High School Diploma or the equivalent
· One year Phlebotomy experience; certification is preferred but not required
- Experience with the Geriatric Population is preferred
· Good driving record required and will be verified
Active state issued driver’s license in good standing.

Language Skills:
· Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
· Additional languages preferred.
Skills:
· Basic computer knowledge.

-Prepare patient for diagnostic exam, perform appropriate positioning of patient; adjusting immobilization devices and equipment into specified position; adjusting equipment controls to acquire diagnostic images.
-Maintain needed medical supply inventory; anticipate needed supplies; verify receipt of supplies.
