Welding Supervisor

Responsible for all aspects of welding work including but not limited to managing welding field and shop projects, managing welding field and shop technicians, developing processes, training, work instructions and procedures as well as performing all welding inspections for projects (jobs) either in-house or at customer site.

Daily Core Tasks :

Prioritize, schedule, and delegate work assignments to ensure the following :

Jobs are completed on-time

Quality specifications are met

Costs are controlled and within budget, including but not limited to the following :

Raw Materials

Subcontracted Processes

Direct Labor

Plan welding production schedules for both shop and field projects.

Establish and qualify welding processes.

  • Review and compare actual vs estimated costs.
  • As required, create, and implement process improvement plans where deficiencies are identified.

Review parts shortages with Purchasing and adjust schedules as necessary.

As required, be an active participant in quoting jobs.

As required, act as a technical resource to address and resolve inquiries and problems.

Project Management Tasks :

Manage all aspects of welding (jobs), including but not limited to the following :

Kick-off Meetings

Order material(s), as required

Manage shop and field welding technicians

Manage field welding sub-contractors, as required

Manage fabrication welding sub-contractors, as required

  • Create Welding work instructions
  • Create Welding Procedures (WPS)
  • Coordinate with certified Welding Engineer(s) to create and draft new Welding Procedures (WPS)
  • Routings, as required

    Labor

    Design weldments based on immediate needs of the field machinist or engineering department

    Post Job Review and Summary write ups

    Properly communicate both internally and externally to ensure all parties are in alignment. Mark up prints to provide clear communication. Utilize tools such as email, spreadsheets, File Maker and Gantt charts.

    Administrative Tasks :

  • Document and maintain Welding Log
  • Document and maintain Welding Training Log
  • Train welders on new techniques and equipment
  • Test welders to AWS Certifications
  • Manage the fleet of welding equipment including but not limited to maintenance, location, etc
  • Purchase new capital equipment as required
  • Manage the shelf life and controlled storage of welding consumables.
  • Welding Tasks :

  • Perform welding inspection both on internal and external projects.
  • Perform in-house welding to support internal or external projects.
  • Perform field (on-site) welding to support customer jobs.
  • Be an active participant planning and mobilizing field welding projects to ensure proper equipment is supplied to the customer's job.
  • Subject Matter Expert Tasks :

    Act as a Subject Matter Expert for welding, including but not limited to the following :

    Internal processing, external processing and training of personnel

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

    Education

  • High school diploma or GED / HSED, required
  • Journeyman welder or 2-year technical degree, strongly preferred
  • American Weld Society (ASW) Certification, required
  • ASME Certification, required
  • Level I NDT Certification (VT / MT / PT), required
  • Level II NDT Certification (VT / MT / PT), preferred
  • Level I NDT Certification (UT / RT), preferred
  • Experience & Skills

    Ten plus years of progressively responsible related experience. Specifically, this position requires :

  • Extensive experience (10 years) in GMAW, FCAW and TIG type(s) of welding which includes all applicable materials.
  • Experience in a job shop or field environment
  • Extensive ability to perform Out of Position (Vertical Up, Overhead, Angle, etc) welding
  • Extensive ability to weld solid backed weldments
  • Proficient ability to weld open root
  • Extensive ability to bore weld
  • Proficient ability to plasma arc cutting and gouging
  • Proficient ability to carbon arc gouging
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with AWS and ASME welding codes
  • Extensive knowledge, understanding and ability to read and interpret welding symbols

    Extensive ability to read and interpret weld prints & mechanical drawings

    Extensive experience working with and developing weld fixturing

    Experience in low volume and high mix environment

    Experience in process improvement and Lean Manufacturing

    Extensive mechanical aptitude

    Experience machining, preferred

    Team Leader Responsibilities

    Carry out team leader responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to do the following :

  • Occasionally talk or hear
  • Frequently sit, use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls
  • Frequently stand and walk
  • Frequently climb ladders and stairs
  • Frequently stoop, kneel, bend or crouch
  • Frequently lift and / or move physical products (up to 50 lbs)
  • Frequently use portable hand power tools (angle grinder, drill, power hammer, etc.)
  • Respirator fit testing and use may be required
  • Specific vision abilities : include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Work Environment

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. These include : forklift traffic, overhead cranes, machining, welding, fumes, airborne particles, moving of mechanical parts and moderate noise. The work is performed indoors in a shop environment or a customer site both indoors and outdoors. Will spend a minimal amount of time outdoors in hot, cold, or otherwise inclement weather during part of the workweek.

    Other Requirements

    OSHA 30

    Valid driver’s license, required

    Successful completion of IPM Overhead Crane Training, required

    Successful completion of IPM’s Forklift Training, required

    Travel Time – up to 25% (daily, overnight and weekends)

    Travel Locations : jobs sites (domestic and international) and company facilities
