TITLE: Reading Specialist

 

REPORTS TO: Principal

 

EVALUATION: Certified Teacher Evaluation

 

WORK CALENDAR: 189 Teacher Work Calendar plus 10 additional work days 

 

COMPENSATION: Teacher Salary, plus $7,000 stipend for Reading Specialist Addendum inclusive of ten (10) additional work days and the additional duties outlined in this job description.

 

PURPOSE

Support students and teachers with the whole group, one-on-one and in small groups using strategies such as modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback, with an emphasis on instructional excellence in early literacy. Collaborate with the school leadership team to determine instructional needs of the staff and to provide professional learning opportunities in alignment with Instructional Leadership team priorities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate
  2. Valid Arizona Department of Education Literacy endorsement
  3. Three (3) years successful classroom teaching experience
  4. Experience in teaching reading intervention groups
  5. Meet state qualifications or be in the process of meeting state qualifications to be a Dyslexia Designee

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Main Position:

  1. Provide K-3 reading and writing support to children and teachers through supplemental groups and/or supplemental individual instruction in the classroom.
  2. Serve as the site Dyslexia Designee.
  3. Work with the ILT to meet all Move on When Reading (MOWR) requirements.
  4. Assist in the planning of professional development that supports effective literacy instruction and is responsive to the needs of the school or student groups.
  5. Perform other duties related to the implementation of the school wide plan.
  6. Use and interpret data from summative, formative, screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring assessments to inform instructional support.
  7. Support teachers and administrators in using assessment data to improve instruction, including data from summative, formative, screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring assessments, including the effectiveness of MTSS systems. 
  8. Understand and use a variety of coaching techniques, including demonstration teaching, co-teaching, the coaching cycle, and/or cognitive coaching.
  9. Develop  and plan coaching support plans for teachers, in coordination with the Academic Coach, to ensure student growth.
  10. Create an articulated schedule in coordination with the Academic Coach to maximize the instructional day to support teacher and student learning.
  11. Informally observe (non-evaluative) lessons and provide feedback for a teacher’s professional growth and students’ success using the coaching cycle (pre-observation planning, observation, post-observation reflection).
  12. Demonstrate an understanding of the district-adopted core, supplemental, and intervention resources for literacy.
  13. Provide direction and coordination of ELA curriculum and instruction consistent with district initiatives and recognized best instructional practices.
  14. Support the instructional development of all teachers in understanding the BESD ELA curriculum, state standards, assessment framework, and data analysis process.
  15. Work with site Academic Coaches, new-teacher mentors and the CIA Team to offer instructional support during district professional development sessions,(such as NTO, D.PLC, and site PD dates).
  16. Demonstrate skillful modeling of instructional practices and key elements of instruction in the classroom setting and in site collaborative teams or other professional learning environments.
  17. Assist teachers with locating and effectively using ELA resources, materials, tools, information, etc., to support classroom instruction and planning.
  18. Assist teachers and grade level teams with planning and pacing of ELA lessons, the development of differentiated lessons, and the selection of best practices to meet the needs of their students.
  19. Utilize Adult Learning Theory to motivate adult learners to improve professional practice
  20. Plan for and  implement job-embedded professional learning techniques such as action research, case discussions, lesson study, study groups, reflective practice, PLCs, and/or data teams.
  21. Provide job-embedded professional learning.
  22. Plan and conduct meetings, in-services and workshops for staff as they relate to ELA curriculum, assessment and instruction.
  23. Build strong relationships with teachers, administrators, academic coaches, and other reading specialists.
  24. Possess collaborative skills that allow for productive relationships with teachers at all grade levels.
  25. Work with peer academic coaches, reading specialists, new-teacher mentors and the CIA Team to offer instructional support regarding tiers 1 and 2 instruction in the classroom setting.
  26. Work productively as a team member with the district CIA team, the school leadership team, the teaching staff, classified staff, site-based teams, and community groups.
  27. Contribute to the development of systems and structures to improve teacher practice within schools.
  28. Attend meetings, district activities, and training, which may occur outside of contracted duty time. 
  29. Maintain open communication with students, parents, community and staff.
  30. Engage in personal and professional development through involvement in professional organizations and by attending and presenting at professional conferences, conducting colleague visits, facilitating school visitation, writing for publication, and engaging in professional reading.
  31. Compile program reports for the administrative team and Governing Board, as requested.
  32. Other duties as assigned.
