Role overview:
Indelible is helping individuals on their journey toward economic self-sufficiency and recovery following disasters. As a contracted Disaster Shelter Specialist, you will play a vital role in assisting hurricane survivors while they temporarily reside in shelters and evacuation centers. The specialist may be assigned to assist in planning and managing the preparation and service of feeding shelter residents, setting up and assigning sleeping areas, coordinating and managing shelter supplies, and supporting shelter activities, as needed.
Location and Pay:
- $25/hr.
- Flexible location with the ability to travel throughout the State of Florida to counties impacted by disasters.
- Team members may be re-assigned to another site or visit more than one site during the day, as requested by the client.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Feeding Staff – Provide meals, snacks, and water for residents and staff. Ensure that necessary resources for food service are available. Plan for and manage the preparation and service of meals and snacks.
- Dormitory Staff – Set up and assign sleeping areas within the dormitory; coordinate with logistics or the shelter manager for cots, blankets, and hygiene kits; and monitor the dormitory area to maintain a safe and quiet environment for residents to sleep and rest.
- Shelter Worker – Support shelter activities, including serving as a screener, client registration, and meal service.
- Assist colleagues with tasks and projects as directed by your supervisor.
- Promote a culture of equity and inclusion within the team.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with survivors, vendors, management, and colleagues, using appropriate language and tailoring information to meet the needs of the audience.
- Develop and maintain professional, trusting relationships with supervisors, staff, survivors, and vendors, responding with empathy and respect to all inquiries and concerns.
- Show up on time, dressed professionally, and work effectively under pressure, maintaining a calm demeanor.
- Provide situational reports on shelter activities.
What Our Ideal Candidate Looks Like:
- Ability to work extended hours, including evenings, overnight, and weekends, as necessary.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass a level 2 background screening.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Experience working with disaster survivors and/or social services programs.
This position is for an independent contractor role. As an independent contractor, you will be responsible for managing your own taxes, benefits, and insurance.
