What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instructor position at Independent Electrical Contractors of Greater St. Louis?
The IEC of Greater St. Louis strives to provide excellence in instruction to area electricians. The St. Louis chapter was awarded the 2021 Apprenticeship Chapter of the Year Award by IEC National. We continue to have top finishers in the annual National Wire Off Competition.
IEC instructors are the key to future success in electrical industry. Instructors are hired to teach on a year to year basis. They will use the National IEC Curriculum as the base of their teaching, but may enhance the curriculum with power points and visuals from their own experiences. The instructor is responsible to write and grade tests, quizzes and homework assignments
Responsibilities
Teach the provided electrical apprenticeship or PEP curriculum to apprentices. Classes are one night a week for four hours. Class sessions run August through May.

- Electric charges & basic math
- Ohm's Law, electric symbols, circuit theory
- Conduit Bending
- Voltage drops
- Two and three way switches
- Swimming pools, spas, hot tubs
SECOND YEAR TOPICS (include, but not limited to)
- Print reading
- Service and distribution
- Heavy in NEC Code
- AC Theory
- Generators
- Transformers
THIRD YEAR TOPICS (include, but not limited to)
- Grounding & bonding
- AC voltage systems
- Print reading

FOURTH YEAR TOPICS (include, but not limited to)

The IEC considers the Instructor’s position to be one of extreme importance. The Instructor is the contact between IEC and the apprentice.
The Instructors shall attempt, whenever possible, to be neatly dressed. A shirt and long pants are preferred. Some Instructors will come to the classroom straight from their jobs as electricians. It is understood by IEC that under these circumstances, clean, neat clothing may be difficult to obtain.
Qualifications
- DOL certified journeyman electrician
- Must promote the merit shop philosophy
- Prior teaching experience not necessary
