About Independent Living Choices: Independent Living Choices is a 501c3 Nonprofit that provides services to people with disabilities who make independence their choice. One of only 2 Centers for Independent Living in the state of South Dakota, we provide services to 50 counties and all 9 Tribal Nations.
What it’s Like to Work Here: Many of our employees have been with Independent Living Choices for a number of years. That is because we prioritize work-life balance, provide our staff with a great deal of autonomy, provide great benefits, and never lose sight of our mission; provide services to people with disabilities who make independence their choice. Starting wage is between $17 -$19 per hour, DOQ. Health, vision, dental, 401k, 160 hours of Paid Time Off annually, and additional benefits are available after the introductory period. You will also receive 9 paid holidays per year. Agency vehicles are also provided for work-related travel.
A Day in the Life of an Independent Living Specialist: No two days as an Independent Living Specialist will ever be the same. As an Independent Living Specialist, you will spend time in the office, in local communities, and in the homes of people with disabilities. You will provide direct services to participants (teach skills, provide devices, assist with applications, etc), help them identify and access other resources and services, make referrals, participate in outreach activities, facilitate peer support groups, transition classes, and more!
Qualifications to be an Independent Living Specialist: The right person will be self-motivated and passionate about helping others. Must excel in problem solving, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills. A bachelor’s degree in a human services or social work field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred, but not required. Must possess a valid South Dakota driver’s license.
