Summary

The Director of Programs and Convenings will be a pivotal force in transforming innovative concepts into impactful programs that drive sector-wide change. This role plays a central part in shaping the content strategy for the Independent Sector National Summit, our flagship convening, ensuring it is dynamic, engaging, and responsive to the evolving needs of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector. In collaboration with the Vice President of Programs, the Director will also support the planning and execution of the National Summit, contributing to a seamless experience across content and logistics.

The ideal candidate excels in collaborating cross-functionally with subject matter experts, program leads, and external partners to develop high-impact learning experiences. The candidate also plays a key role in supporting the planning and execution of convenings, conferences, and other events.

Essential Job Functions

Program Design and Implementation

  • Lead the transformation of concepts into structured programs that drive sector-wide impact.
  • Manage special initiatives, including two CEO circles and the Strategic Volunteer Engagement as part of IS' workforce strategy, ensuring meaningful engagement and outcomes.
  • Apply principles of instructional design to develop engaging, impactful content for programs and initiatives.
  • Develop training materials, guides, and resources to support program implementation and participant learning.
  • Ensure all content is accessible, relevant, and tailored to the needs of the nonprofit sector.

Collaboration and Partnership

  • Partner with the Institutional Advancement team to respond proposal requests, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and strategic priorities.
  • Coordinate with the Membership team to develop and strengthen membership programs that address the needs of Independent Sector members.
  • Work alongside the Policy and Research team to translate insights and findings into actionable programs and initiatives.
  • Support the Advocacy and Engagement team in transforming policy efforts into practical tools and programs that drive systemic change.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Impact Evaluation and Knowledge Management to ensure programs are effectively measured, evaluated, and continuously improved.

Planning and Execution of Convenings

  • Under the direction of the Vice President of Programs, support the logistics of the IS National Summit and additional convenings as needed.
  • Assist in the management of consultants to ensure successful execution of the summit.

Supervisory responsibilities

  • Oversees training of direct reports.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of direct reports.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Motivates, disciplines and directs employees.
  • Directly supervises employees and consultants as assigned.

Experience and Education

Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. Master's degree preferred plus a minimum of -5-7years of experience in program design, instructional design, or a related role within the nonprofit sector.

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of designing and implementing high-impact programs and convenings, including large-scale events and leadership initiatives.
  • Strong expertise in instructional design and content development.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage complex programs and initiatives.
  • Excellent collaboration and partnership skills, with experience working across diverse teams.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to think strategically and translate concepts into actionable programs.
  • Ability to live out IS' organizational values in day to work.

Work Environment

The work environment is a typical office environment. The noise level is usually quiet. Up to 20% travel may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Salary : $110,000 - $120,000
