Summary
Assists in creating a positive learning environment supporting students academically, emotionally, and behaviorally. Ensure student safety and security by actively monitoring and addressing concerns. Teaching Assistants work collaboratively with their cooperating teacher to meet the needs of all students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assists teachers with instructing and supervising students in a classroom.
Assists teachers in preparing activities and materials that support lesson plans.
Delivers small group or one-on-one workshops as prescribed by the teacher.
Works collaboratively with the classroom teacher to provide a safe learning environment.
Fosters cooperative social behavior through games and group projects to assist children in forming satisfying relationships with other children and adults.
Encourages students to participate in activities to promote self-expression.
Instructs students in practices of personal cleanliness and self-care.
Encourages and supports positive student behavior in alignment with the School’s behavior philosophy.
Complies with State Laws in reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.
Keeps attendance and grade records.
Supervises playground, cafeteria and buses when scheduled.
Participates in faculty meetings, team curriculum meetings, educational conferences, professional development seminars and workshops as required.
Participates in the school-wide student mentor program creating a community that embraces each one of its children with love, care, and respect while teaching traditional values.
Incorporates American Indian culture, language, traditions and the seven Sacred Gifts into the daily work.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Early Childhood training or certification preferred.
Prior assistant experience in a school/classroom setting.
Work Environment
Most work is performed in an indoor, climate-controlled environment. Noise levels may reach high volumes at times. Some work may be performed outside in weather and at various field trip locations.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type
School-year Full-time. Regular attendance is essential to succeed in this role.
