What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health Technician (EMT) position at Indian Health Service?
This position serves as an Health Technician (EMT) at the Pine Ridge Service Unit, Pine Ridge, SD. The primary purpose is to perform advanced technical health care extender functions within the emergency medical arena in response to various accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: taking vital signs; determining what the provider needs to treat the patient; performing catheterizations; providing instructions to patients; assisting the provider in medical treatments; collecting a wide variety of specimens.
OR
Four (4) year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to Health Technician occupation.
OR
I have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-05 grade level.
GS-06: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Independently conducts a complete assessment, using knowledge of topographic anatomy, major body systems, emergency medicine techniques, ability to sufficiently understand the legal considerations of emergency care.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

- Must possess a current unrestricted Emergency Medical Technician Certification (EMT) from a U.S. State or Territory.
Responsibilities:
- Performs technical health care extender functions by identifying and treating trauma/medical emergencies using advanced level medical techniques that will most effectively sustain the patient's life.
- Performs safety and maintenance inspection of minor repairs on emergency patient transport vehicles and equipment; prepare appropriate transport documents, including patient care reports; replaces supplies, and ensures sanitation and cleanliness of patient transport vehicles.
- Communicates orally and in writing with medical and ancillary personnel using skills in emergency communication techniques and the operation of radio equipment.
