Type: Tribal Salary Range: $41,704 to $52,124 / Per Year Open Period: 9/17/2015 to 12/31/2015 Summary: MEDICAL RECORDS TECHNICIAN (CODER) - INPATIENT: Under general supervision, this position provides technical assistance with processing and maintaining hospital encounter forms for compliance with regulatory requirements by reviewing, analyzing, coding, abstracting and compiling data and statistics for inpatient and outpatient visits into the automated Resource Patient Management System (RPMS). This promotes continuity of medical care, accurate database information and optimization of reimbursement. The function also ensures compliance with the established coding guidelines, third party reimbursement policies, regulations and accreditation guidelines. Work is performed on an assigned shift, often at night, weekends, and on holidays in accordance with established guidelines of the Health Information Management operations. Qualifications: Experience: Four (4) years inpatient coding experience in a healthcare facility (highly desired coding experience with day surgeries, observation and ambulatory visits). Education: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Must possess a Certified Coding Specialist Certification with American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). • Knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, techniques and surgical procedures; anatomy and physiology; major disease processes; pharmacology; and the metric system to indentify specific clinical findings, to support existing diagnosis, or substantiate listing additional diagnoses in the medical record.
• Knowledge of RPMS and Electronic Health Record in order to analyse encounters and notify providers of data that need correction through EHR broadcast, notification and templates.
• Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and requirements in regards to the incumbent's rights, responsibilities and possible penalties when patient confidentiality is violated.
• Knowledge of accrediting agencies, Medicare/Medicaid, Office of Inspector General, to ensure the record complies with requirements of regulatory agencies.
• Knowledge of performance Improvement methodology to track, recommend resolutions, and report on status of adverse or quality service.
• Knowledge of classification systems and references such as the International Classification of Disease (ICD), Ambulatory Patient Groups (APG's), Physician's Desk Reference (PDR), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), medical dictionaries, manuals and other reference materials.
• Skilled in medico-legal aspects of medical record systems.
• Skilled in Quantitative and Qualitative analysis procedures and processes.
• Skilled in computerized data entry and information processing systems.
• Skilled in data collection to compile and organize data for reporting and presentation.
• Ability to meet recommended coding productivity standards of AHIMA.
• Ability to correlate laboratory results with procedures, and treatments for diagnoses.
• Ability to adhere to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), hospital policies, federal, state and tribal laws applicable to work duties.
• Ability to apply Medical Records Management Systems including theory, principles, practices, techniques, concepts and policies.
• Ability to communicate effectively oral or written skills using a professional business format.
• Ability to learn the International Classification of Disease (ICD 10-CM/PCS). Ability to provide excellent customer service with internal and external customers.
• A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers.
