LIFE SAFETY INSPECTOR:
Perform life safety inspections for fire and building permits in accordance with applicable County Codes and Florida Fire Prevention Code for newly constructed and renovated buildings and structures. Conducts plan review in the absence of the Senior Life Safety Plans Examiner. Enforces all fire codes and acts as liaison between the County government and the general public. This is a skilled position, working independently under the general supervision of the Director of Building and Facilities Services.
- Organize daily inspection load, route, and activities.
- Maintains inspection records and statistics as required.
- Inspect construction activity for possession of permits and compliance with fire codes, county ordinances, and other rated laws and regulations.
- Explain fire codes to professional people such as contractors, architects, and engineers.
- Provides assistance and/or directions to permit applicants during the construction process.
- Issues violations and/or stop work orders when necessary and reports same to superior immediately with report of same.
- Conducts fire inspections of buildings and structures.
- Use of computer for permitting and inspection system, resulting inspections, adding inspections, taking photos, accessing documents, researching, citing code sections, maps, producing reports, issuing Notice of Violations, Stop Work Orders, and emails.
Education/Experience:
High school graduate or possess a GED supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of work experience. An associate degree may be considered to satisfy one (1) year or required work experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Possess and maintain a Florida State Certified Fire Safety Inspector I (Fire Inspector II preferred).
- Certified Fire Plans Examiner (CFPE) by NFPA or similar plans examination/inspector (I.C.C) certification highly desirable.
- Florida DBPR Plans Examiner or Inspector licenses preferred.
- Florida class E driver’s license.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of the county, state, and fire codes, and interpretation of the codes in previous similar situations.
Physical ability to inspect building sites and climb ladders and/or stairs to perform inspections. Ability to communicate code requirement violations tactfully to contractors, builders, and owners.
Ability to read and understand construction plans in order to determine if construction meets required codes and standards.
Must possess excellent customer service skills with the ability to maintain a friendly demeanor.
Knowledge of the principles of fire protection.
Knowledge of the laws and regulations concerning fire inspection in the State of Florida.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is performed outside under various types of weather conditions and buildings at various stages of construction.
