ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential job functions and responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
- Effectively counseling students to promote retention and completion, providing advocacy to assure student needs are met, and supporting students in achieving their educational and career goals.
- Providing specialized leadership, expertise, training and support related to services for students with disabilities.
- Collaborating with an assigned caseload of students to develop and maintain planned programs of study leading to completion of a credential linked to the students’ educational and career goals.
- Proactively assuring that assigned students are provided with all information and assistance needed to facilitate timely completion, articulation to upper-division educational opportunities and/or transition to a career.
- Maintaining deep cross-functional working knowledge of all students' services functions including admissions, financial aid, advising, career services; and curriculum services.
- Serving on college committees and community organizations as assigned.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The specific duties and responsibilities for this position focus on the development, implementation, and assessment of support services and programs designed to increase retention, graduation, academic success, and career transition of students with disabilities, including:
- Assuming lead responsibility to ensure effective, accessible and comprehensive services for students with disabilities.
- Reviewing disability-related documentation, consulting with individual students regarding eligibility, determining and implementing reasonable accommodations.
- Serving as an expert consultant and resource to students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding disability resources, accommodations, services, campus accessibility, policies and procedures.
- Maintaining deep, current knowledge and institutional compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, the provision of reasonable accommodations, and best practices to promote student success.
- Collaborating with assigned caseload of students in defining educational and career goals, selecting a suitable major, developing an individualized Academic Plan/Guided Pathway, progressing to a degree or certificate, taking proactive interventions to address any barriers or obstacles to success, and transitioning to further educational and/or career pursuits.
- Meeting individually with assigned caseload of students for academic, career, and personal counseling, following a structured Checkpoint Advising protocol, and maintaining complete, timely and accurate counseling records.
- Utilizing educational advising tools and resources such as Career Coach and interest inventories to help in setting educational goals and guided pathways.
- Applying expertise and experience in using and maintaining assistive technologies in an educational setting; Serving as a proactive liaison and advocate between students and campus departments.
- Providing training on a regular basis addressing disability-related issues to faculty and staff.
- Working to resolve issues related to student educational success, including connecting students to resources within and outside of the college.
- Collaborating with area high schools and community agencies to assist students with disabilities in the transition to college.
- Coordinating projects and strategies as assigned to enhance student retention and completion.
- Participating in faculty committees as assigned.
- Facilitating voter registration for students with disabilities.
- Completing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services or the Director of Advising Services.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:
- Minimum of a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from a regionally accredited institution, with significant specialized coursework in Exceptional Student Education.
- A minimum of five (5) years of proven work experience in academic counseling, with a minimum of three years of specialization in disability services for college students.
- Strong commitment to the community/state college mission and proven effectiveness in supporting student success.
- Demonstrated leadership, specialized expertise, effective advocacy, empathy and sensitivity in supporting the vocational, psychosocial, and academic development and success of students with disabilities.
- Extensive working knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations relating to persons with disabilities, including expertise regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008.
- Expertise in compiling, analyzing and interpreting disability-related documentation and coordinating accommodations appropriate to a broad range of learning, physical, chronic health and psychological disabilities.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively, collaboratively and diplomatically in a team-based environment with a diverse population of students, as well as administrators, faculty, staff, external agencies, school districts and the public.
- Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional initiative and sound judgment to be an effective decision-maker and creative problem solver.
- Ability to be well organized and demonstrate effective time management, determination, flexibility and creativity.
- Ability to function effectively and productively with multiple priorities.
- Valid Florida driver’s license.
- Appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
