JOB SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision, this position supports Upward Bound students at The River Hammock Apartments by assisting them with personal concerns and problems on behalf of the College. Duties include: creating a community environment conducive to the academic enhancement, personal growth, and development of Upward Bound students; helping to maintain an efficient and effective operation; coordinating and providing oversight of students during planned Upward Bound activities; and conducting safety, curfew, and maintenance inspections.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with check-in registration and check-out procedures; acquaints students with all facilities and services on the campus; and refers as needed.
- Remains sensitive to subtle mood changes and erratic behavior that may be exhibited by the students.
- Oversees students' daily schedule of activities; monitors students during classes; and assists: in the process of identifying student needs and interests.
- Supervises students at recreational activities, field trips, and cultural trips; assists with physical training/ team sports/leisure activities, etc.; and operates a 15-passenger van for travel purposes.
- Observes students to ensure: general safety in the evening hours; compliance with program rules; and that grooming and apartment safety/ sanitation rules are followed.
- Inspects all rooms with participating students daily and also at the end of the program; provides impromptu inspection when necessary.
- Handles minor problems; refers all others to the appropriate Upward Bound staff or River Hammock Manager.
- Provides assistance with daytime and evening programs as needed.
- Resides in The River Hammock Apartments with the students Sunday evenings through Friday evenings; assists other Resident Assistants as needed.
- Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- (experience working with disadvantaged and underrepresented student populations is preferred); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Valid Florida driver's license.
- Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution and in good standing with the College.
- Must have achieved thirty (30) semester hours and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
- Recommendation letters from two College faculty or staff members are desired.
- Knowledge of working with disadvantaged and underrepresented student populations.
- Knowledge of math and science at appropriate levels for program.
- Knowledge of health and safety guidelines related to job duties.
- Skill in organizing and prioritizing.
- Skill in working with Microsoft Office and Windows based applications.
- Ability to reason, utilize good judgment, and communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to supervise and advise students participating in the IRSC Upward Bound Math and Science Program for a six (6)-week Summer Residential Program;
- Ability to operate a 15-passenger van.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as sedentary work involving lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required occasionally, and other sedentary criteria are met.
