Job Description

To serve as a member of the Public Information Office (PIO) who oversees the care and preservation of the historical collection of the Indiana State Police Museum, is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day running of the Museum and serves as the administrator of the Museum's retail Logo Store. Maintain the long-term viability of the collection and keep a proper inventory of all collection pieces. Oversee the development and production of displays and provide information on the collection pieces for display and historical purposes. Interact with the public and train other agency members on the care of the collection and provide information of historical value for program presentation. Create and present programs on the history of the Indiana State Police suitable for all ages.

Job Duties

  • Acts as project manager for all collections care and exhibit design.
  • Supervises and coordinates Museum Special Programs and Events.
  • Identifies and secures collections for both permanent and temporary exhibits.
  • Develop, maintain, and oversee the Museum collection with regards to acquisition, registration, accessioning and de- accessioning, inventory, cataloging, research, and records computerization of the entire collection.
  • Environmental monitoring and control, storage maintenance of collections and security, object arrangement, and descriptions for the collection and displays.
  • Assists PIO Commander in creating Museum operational budgets and grant applications. Manage all development and creation of core exhibit content and text.
  • Conducts research and interprets artifacts and archival materials.
  • Researches and manages statement of justification documentation for all items needed to care for exhibits and manage the running of the Museum.
  • Consults and creates appropriate levels of conservation, mounting, security, display and professional care of the collections within the Museum.
  • Participates in strategic planning and decision-making for the Indiana State Police Museum.
  • Participates in marketing and publicity, representing the Museum at events.
  • Supervises Internships and Volunteers working in the Museum.
  • Participate in short and long-range strategic planning and implementation for the Museum.
  • Schedules the conference room.
  • Schedules and conducts tours for tour groups.
  • Create, organize, and maintain documentation systems and protocols for handling, care, preservation, use, and display of the collection.
  • Coordinate all aspects of borrowing and lending objects for the Museum.
  • Manage all requests and responses for photography, image reproductions, and permissions for the collection.
  • Update records with known historical references and provenance information as needed.
  • Maintain all records of the collection and records relating to any donations.
  • Prepare information for publication about the Museum.
  • Research, write and oversee grant applications for the Museum.
  • Write articles about and assist in the marketing of the Museum.
  • Serve on committees, boards, or groups representing the Museum.
  • Attend training and professional development conferences as required.
  • Assist external researchers to examine and research the collection of the Museum.
  • Manages all transactions within the Museum Logo Store and provides daily documentation to the agency fiscal department.
  • Determines what items will be at the Logo Store, inventories supply and writes all documentation requesting such items.
  • Perform other duties and essential functions as assigned.
  • Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required. Liberal Arts disciplines, Marketing, History, Business Management or other relevant subject area preferred.
  • Perform all duties in a professional manner, reflecting and responding to current professional standards and the organization's policies and procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail relating to collections care and management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with creating content for social media.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, plus a strong understanding of Collections Management Systems (PastPerfect).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to form and maintain positive work relationships.
  • Must be able to work with little or no supervision and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background investigation. Applicants are asked to submit a complete work history.
