Basic Function: Responsible for providing coaching and professional development to Education staff.

1. In collaboration with the Educational Coordinators establish and implement a systemic approach to staff training and professional development. The system must include research-based approaches to professional development for education staff that are focused on:

  • effective curricula implementation,
  • knowledge of the content in Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework: Ages Birth to Five,
  • partnering with families,
  • supporting children with disabilities and their families,
  • providing effective and nurturing adult-child interactions, supporting dual language learners as appropriate,
  • addressing challenging behaviors,
  • preparing children and families for transitions; and,
  • use of data to individualize learning experiences to improve outcomes for children

2. Implement a research-based, coordinated coaching strategy for education staff that at minimum, provides opportunity for:

  • intensive coaching to…education staff identified…[as benefiting most from intensive coaching] including opportunities to be observed and receive feedback and modeling of effective teaching practices directly related to program performance goals;
  • education staff not identified for intensive coaching…to receive other forms of research-based professional development aligned with program performance goals

3. Implement a research-based, coordinated coaching strategy that ensures intensive coaching opportunities for [education] staff that:

  • align with the program’s school readiness goals, curricula, and other approaches to professional development;
  • utilize a coach with adequate training and experience in adult learning and in using assessment date to drive coaching strategies aligned with program performance goals;
  • provide ongoing communication between the coach, program director, education director, and any other relevant staff; and,
  • include clearly articulated goals informed by the program’s goals…and process for achieving those goals

4. Provides ongoing classroom coaching to teachers and assistant teachers.

5. Meets regularly with education services manager.

6. Participates in professional development as necessary.

7. Follows the practice-based coaching model.

8. Conducts an annual staff PD needs assessment in conjunction with the Education Manager.

Mental Health Assistant

1. Complete Observations (CLASS, TPOT, ABC data collection, etc.)

2. Upload and document behavioral data in ChildPlus and/or database

3. Participate in behavioral planning meetings

4. Assist in the social emotional screening process

5. Assist in gathering and creating social emotional materials for individuals or classrooms as needed

6. Respond and support as needed to crisis situations

7. Assist in implementation and modeling of behavioral interventions

8. Will substitute as bus monitor.

9. Assists MHC and CSC in child observations.

10. Assists in child screenings as needed (Battelle, AS-Q, etc.)

11. Conducts CLASS observations.

12. Duties as assigned consistent with the basic job function.

Qualifications and Requirements

1. Must have a BS in early childhood/child development or related field with a minimum of two years Head Start teaching experience.

2. Preference given to those who demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills and previous mentor/coaching experience.

3. Maintain training on research-based coaching model.

4. Experience working with mental health or trauma related behaviors.

5. Computer competency required.

6. Must have access to transportation, be able to work some evenings and travel out of the area.

7. Must have sensitivity to the needs of young children and their families.

8. Must have sensitivity to the goals of the Head Start program.

9. Visual and auditory ability to maintain a safe and secure work environment.

10. Physical and mental ability to supervise and assist children during indoor and outdoor activities which includes the use of gross motor equipment, walks and field trips.

11. Physical and mental ability to respond quickly to needs of children during daily activities and in emergency situations.

12. Must be able to restrain 65 pounds.

13. Physical and mental ability to model and participate in activities designed for 3-5 year old children which includes repetitive bending, stooping, sitting on floor and on child-size chairs (10-12"), and use of gross/fine motor, language, visual and cognitive skills.

14. Must satisfactorily complete medical exam, tuberculin test, and drug screening and sex offender registry check.

15. Must obtain a PA child abuse history clearance and a PA state police criminal record check, including fingerprints, and FBI criminal history fingerprint-based record check.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $23.60 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
