Job Responsibilities
- Verify all documentation.
- Apply appropriate ICD-10 diagnosis codes and appropriate CPT codes.
- Enter any applicable charges to appropriate provider and place of service.
- Recognize the importance of appropriate use of ICD-10 and CPT codes for medical necessity.
- Understand the difference of each place of service and utilize the correct CPT that corresponds with it.
- Utilize all available resources.
- Answer any calls you may get in a courteous and pleasant manner, identifying yourself and the organization. Help caller with any questions or concerns they may have.
- Remain current regarding federal, state, hospital, interdepartmental and third-party carriers including managed care, HCFA rules and regulations. Adheres to current guidelines.
- Maintain the dignity of the patient and keep confidential all patient, office and hospital information.
- Work cooperatively with the office staff and other members of the health care team and ancillary hospital departments.
- Contribute and facilitate others in team efforts to continuously improve department functions.
- Make appropriate suggestions dealing with any area of the department and follow up on outcomes.
- Organize and execute work assignments with little or no direct supervision.
- Communicate information (written, verbal, electronic) that is timely, clear, and to the appropriate individuals. Communication results in smooth operation of the department.
- Demonstrate willingness to assist with orientation and development of new employees.
- Attend appropriate in-service/in-house programs and outside seminars as requested.
Qualifications
Experience and Education: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Must have a CPC certification through AAPC or HIMA. Must pass IHPS’s coding ICD-10/CPT exam.
Knowledge: Modern operational method germane to a billing office; clerical equipment, operations and processes; knowledge of healthcare insurance regulations, policies and procedures, must have basic understanding of medical terms, human anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, abbreviations and ICD-10 and CPT books; usage of computer systems and various medical forms.
Ability To: Make a great first impression and sustain it; answer multiline telephones; operate a 10-key adding machine by touch; operate or learn to operate automated systems, personal computers and fax machines; employ tact, diplomacy and compassion with all types of people; communicate well irrespective of the medium; exhibit strong interpersonal skills; follow set outlines and be alert to variations and make decisions accordingly; persons working in this position must maintain organized and accurate records.
