The Accommodations Specialist role is an integral part of the Office of Student Success and Accessibility Services. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Accessibility Services and will aid in efforts to provide access and opportunity for Indiana Tech students with disabilities across all online modalities. This position will support Accessibility Services through the implementation of accommodations, auxiliary aids and services for registered students with disabilities as well as providing student support, coaching, and skill building. This position will have the capability of being a hybrid position and will require a couple of evenings each week.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Evaluate disability documentation and engage in the interactive process with students to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations in the classroom and other campus activities
- Implement and coordinate accommodations for registered students with disabilities, including (but not limited to) captioning, alternative formats, interpreters, assistive technology, and digital textbooks
- Maintain caseload of online students for ongoing coordination of academic needs and referrals
- Ensures proper handling of student information in alignment with FERPA laws and other policies within Indiana Tech
- Maintain paperwork and confidential student information
- Act as an advocate for students with disabilities when necessary
- Assist Assistant Director in providing ADA training and appropriate updates to faculty/staff
- Collaborate with faculty, advisors, online team, counseling services, and other university departments to advocate for students’ needs
- Design, plan, and implement student programming
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in psychology, special education, other social science, or related field
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds
- Demonstrated problem solving and conflict resolution skills
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and a strong interest in building cooperative relationships
- Highly organized
- Ability to teach and coach students on academic skills including time management, study skills, organization, self-advocacy, etc.
Experience
- Familiarity with documents and online accessibility standards and best practices, including WCAG guidelines and ARIA attributes, is preferred but not required.
- Must be commensurate with job specifications. Experience in higher education and specifically disability services is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and standards necessary to maintain a high competency in serving the academic needs of students with disabilities is preferred but not required.
Working Conditions
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, Hybrid; hours may be flexible based on student needs (e.g., shifts may vary – 7am-4pm or 10am-7pm).
