What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sterile Processing Technician position at Indiana Joint Replacement Institute?
Summary: Performs cleaning and sterile processing of all supplies and instruments
according to the standards and policies of the facility. Assists in patient care and preparation of
surgical patient by performance of routine and delegated tasks according to the standards and
policies of the facility.
Responsibilities:
1. Cleaning, wraps, sterilizes, stores, and distributes equipment, supplies, instruments used in
patient care.
2. Utilizes advanced knowledge and skills to facilitate daily functions of sterile processing in
accordance with policy and procedures
3. Use of sterilizer per manufacturer guidelines
4. Able to clean sterilizer before and after use
5. Able to clean and maintain instrument washer per guidelines.
6. Uses instrument washer per manufacturers guidelines
7. Able to use ultrasonic cleaner per manufacturers guidelines.
8. Able to clean and maintain ultrasonic cleaner per manufacturers guidelines.
9. Knows proper chemistry products to use for all cleaning purposes.
10. Correctly identifies and logs instruments in sterilization loads
11. Ability to run all biological and quality tests for sterilizer
12. Cleaning sterile supply area
13. Cleaning dirty area
14. Assists with stocking, replenishing, and preparation of supplies
15. Keeps accurate inventory of supplies, informs Clinical Nurse Manager of any supplies that are
needed
16. Place supplies in designated storage areas
17. Remove and label medical waste
18. Maximum care required for the safety of the patient while in the surgery center
19. Care and caution required when handling equipment and supplies
20. Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Responsibilities:
1. Assists in cleaning operating room before/after surgical care
2. Assists in setting up sterile area for surgery
3. Provides assistance in emergency procedure, as well as scheduled cases
4. Assists with preparation, transportation, and monitoring of patients
5. Maintains education in surgical, operating room and related aspects
Requirements:Education: High School Diploma or GED required. CRCST or equivalent experience and
education.
Experience: 2 years past experience in sterile processing preferred. Healthcare experience or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in outpatient healthcare operations or an ambulatory surgery center setting
preferred. Experience in orthopedic surgery is desirable.
Must be knowledgeable in the operation of all facility equipment, sterilizer, instrument washer,
and ultrasonic cleaner.
Other Requirements:
1. Must meet all state specific requirements for background and education.
2. Successfully complete and maintain BLS Certification.
Knowledge:
1. Thorough knowledge of general sterilization and instrument processing.
2. Orthopedic knowledge is preferred.
Skills:
1. Past surgery center or hospital sterile processing preferred.
2. Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
3. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities.
4. Ability to work effectively and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers
and physicians.
Abilities:
