What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Specialist position at Indiana Members Credit Union?
Summary/objective
The role of Accounting Specialist will report to the Controller. The Accounting Department is responsible for providing accurate, relevant, and timely information to end users across the organization to achieve data-driven decisions and high levels of financial performance at Indiana Members Credit Union.
Essential functions

- Be responsible for performing assigned accounting functions, including daily and monthly general ledger reconciliations.
- Preparing invoices to be paid including coding, sending for approval and preparing payment. Following up on vendor issues as needed.
- Review automatic general ledger entries and process any manual entries as needed.
- Monitor and reconcile assigned general ledgers to ensure accuracy.
- Conduct research and be able to resolve branch general ledger issues.
- Assist in the preparation of month-end reporting.
- Assist in the implementation of new accounting standards, regulatory changes impacting the accounting and finance areas, and ongoing process improvements with a high emphasis on identifying and implementing opportunities for automation.
- Prepare variance financial reports and analysis to key stakeholders with a high degree of accuracy.
- Coordinate and assist with other departments as needed to accomplish projects and understand the impact on the financial statements.
- Coordinate and assist, from an accounting perspective, with the roll out of new products, services, or offerings and the impact on the financial statements and accounting and finance functions.
- Maintain a working knowledge of other accounting tasks to provide cross functional support and serve as a backup when needed.
- Maintain a working knowledge of IMCU daily Federal Reserve and ACH functions.
- Establish working knowledge of various daily Accounting tasks.
- Maintains in depth knowledge of all IMCU products and services.
- Build trust throughout the organization by collaborating with the accounting and finance teams and being personally accountable for providing accurate, relevant and timely financial information.
- Continue to develop knowledge of industry practices, products, and professional growth.
- Participate in appropriate learning opportunities to maintain expertise.
- Help on prioritization, tasks, and department project management to ensure departmental initiatives are completed efficiently and effectively.
Required education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
- Financial Institution knowledge preferred.
- Ability to work with all levels of credit union staff.
- Able to work independently and communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate a proficient use of technology tools and possess knowledge of basic system navigation skills.
