The Lab Technician is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests on bodily fluids like blood, urine and tissue samples to aid in patient diagnosis and treatment by operating specialized equipment, analyzing results, and maintaining accurate records, all while adhering to strict quality control protocols in a hospital setting.
PREREQUISITE EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's Degree or Associate Degree in medical laboratory technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological science.
- CPR certification or ability to obtain.
- Certified by ASCP or AMT or equivalent or eligible for certification.
- A minimum of 2 years' experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
**PRN Position, 1 scheduled day per week, some weekend work may be required**

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Respond promptly to computer orders and telephone requests.
- Ensure Quality Control is acceptable before reporting patient results. If unacceptable, document remedial actions taken.
- Follow Universal Precautions.
- Maintain instruments following procedural calibrations, quality control, daily maintenance, cleaning, and troubleshooting.
- Notify Clinical Nurse Manager or CNO of instrument or procedural problems in a timely manner.
- Assist nursing staff with lab process, as needed.
- Maintain adequate inventory of lab supplies. Submit orders as necessary for restocking.
- Coordinate pathology process for frozen sections, as ordered.
- Work with reference lab to maintain adequate supply of blood.
- Prepare biological specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Test biological specimens to gather information about patient conditions.
- Analyze laboratory specimens to detect abnormalities or other problems.
- Enter patient data into electronic health record.
- Operate laboratory equipment to analyze medical samples.
- Notify ordering physician of critical lab result(s).
