Job Summary
Chemistry Lab Supervisor and Lab Instructor position (full time; 12 months) beginning July 1, 2025, to teach primarily chemistry lab classes, such as CHEM-C 120, CHEM-C 125, CHEM-C 126, CHEM-C 109 / 129, CHEM-C 343 and other lab courses as needed.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Responsible for the preparation of lab material, maintaining chemical inventory, and the supervision of hourly lab assistants and is responsible for chemical safety in the teaching labs.
- Conducts and teaches lab experiments and exercises in 8 lab sections per regular semester (and 4 lab sections per summer); 1 lecture may replace 2 lab sections some semesters.
- Provides instruction relative to techniques / material, gather and analyze results; supervise students during lab sessions. Assign grades.
- Teaches introductory chemistry courses and labs (CHEM-C 109, C 120, C 129), general chemistry labs (CHEM-C 125, C 126) including determine schedule, create course materials (lab experiments, lecture notes, tests) deliver lectures / pre-lab lectures, supervise labs, assign grades and teach organic chemistry lab (CHEM-C343) including supervision of 1 lab section, assign grades, and preparation of material for organic chemistry labs.
- Works with faculty to develop plans for lab exercises and semester schedules / syllabi.
- Ensures lab equipment is maintained in working order
- Determines when replacements are needed, consult with the dean as needed.
- Identifies and selects needed supplies, order needed supplies, provide recommendations for vendors (in collaboration with the dean).
- Supervises student hourly assistants and tutors to work in the lab as needed.
- Determine work assignments and schedules, monitor performance.
- Schedules and assists faculty with annual lab audits, and chemical waste disposal.

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
