Radiation Effects Engineer (Assistant Research Innovator)

Job Summary

The IU Center for Reliable and Trusted Electronics (CREATE) is seeking a highly motivated Junior Radiation Effects Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will work closely with the Center Director, graduate students, and program sponsors to analyze and evaluate the impact of radiation on electronic systems and materials, ensuring the reliability of devices used in space, defense, and other radiation-prone environments. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or early-career engineers to gain hands-on experience in radiation effects testing and analysis.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Conducts radiation testing and characterization of electronic components and materials.
  • Assists in analyzing radiation effects on semiconductor devices, circuits, and systems through modeling, simulation, and experimental studies.
  • Collaborates with program sponsors to ensure program alignment.
  • Contributes to the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and documentation of research findings.
  • Plans and executes radiation component testing for TID, SEE, DD, and Prompt Dose environments.
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring the accuracy of testing procedures.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops project proposals, plans and protocols.
  • Conducts routine or fundamental experiments, investigations and / or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques, and concepts.
  • Assists with logistical considerations to include equipment, materials, and labor needs.
  • Collects data / samples related to others' research and in routine cases.
  • Records, compiles, processes, and analyzes data / samples.
  • Documents results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.
  • May assist in the preparation of research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include assisting in literature reviews and assisting in the writing of results and discussions.
  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION

    Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Research, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field
  • Preferred

  • Master's degree in related field is desirable
  • WORK EXPERIENCE

    Required

  • 1 year of relevant experience
  • Preferred

  • Previous internship or academic research in radiation effects or related fields.
  • Experience in using simulation tools like SPICE or similar.
  • Familiarity with space and defense industry standards for radiation testing.

  • Knowledge of radiation effects onelectronics (such as total ionizing dose (TID), single event effects (SEE), etc.)
  • Experience conducting accelerated radiation effects testing
  • Familiarity with semiconductor devices, circuits, and materials
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, signal generators)
  • Proficiency with programming languages such as C, C and Python

    This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
