Job Summary
The Sustainable Waste Management Intern assists with waste reduction and diversion efforts, including launching and coordinating programs, developing education and outreach campaigns, data analysis and tracking. This individual will focus on improving waste diversion infrastructure across IU campuses which may include inventorying and updating waste bins, signage, implementing composting in dining halls, and other waste-related initiatives.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Researches, analyzes, and supports STARS waste categories.
- Assists with improvement of recycling and other waste diversion and recovery efforts, including composting, sustainable procurement, and more.
- Re-evaluates and modifies waste signage as needed.
- Assists with recycling and other waste diversion efforts in on-campus housing.
- Works with various waste generating areas (i.e., academic, dining, athletics) to offer solutions tailored to their operations.
- Monitors available waste data, observes trends, and identifies gaps in data.
- Plans waste-related events, such as waste audits, food waste audits, and move-in / out initiatives, as well as coordinates volunteers at such events.
- Assists with communicating waste diversion efforts.
- Advertises campus sustainability projects that enhance and highlight sustainable waste management practices and events.
- Assists with other sustainability programs and initiatives across the university system or at your home campus.
- Collaborates with sustainability and waste focused student organizations.
- Seeks additional funding or grant sources in support of campus / university-wide sustainability and positions related initiatives.
- Higher Ed / sustainability focused professional development and training opportunities.

Laptop / computer use (e.g. Microsoft Office and email) and cellphones are required. Occasional use of printers / copiers, university data and communication software, and office provided supplies.

Work Environment
The work is performed equally in a remote and office setting. This student employee will be expected to work at least 1 day in the office for mentor and bi-weekly full team meetings, and the remainder of their work will be done remotely, on or off campus. At times, workload requires being outdoors or in high traffic indoor / outdoor campus spaces. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
