What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Distribution Electrician position at Indiana University Bloomington?
Job Summary
- Completes repairs and installations to utility distribution systems, such as circuits, circuit breakers, transformers, emergency generators, and sub-systems. Utilizes skills such as cable pulling and splicing, circuit switching procedures, high-pot testing, and trouble shooting. Distribution systems include 12,470 volt and 5,000 volt systems.
- Installs, connects, and maintains campus building transformers. Assists contractors and Facility Operations employees with power outages and testing. Switches off / on high voltage circuits.
- Performs emergency repair of damaged circuits. Maintains emergency campus generators by performing work such as testing, fueling, repairing, and maintaining campus building generators and oversees repair and maintenance of transfer switches.
- Performs maintenance work related to campus lighting systems, such as changing light ballasts, re-lamping burned-out elements, troubleshooting faults in lighting circuits, and installing and maintaining circuit timers.
- Participates in mandatory training sessions related to high voltage utility systems. Acts as mentor and conduct on-the-job training of lesser-skilled personnel. Performs other utilities related work or general maintenance work as needed.
- Responds to emergency situations immediately and works quickly to correct the problem(s).
- Performs other utilities-related work or general maintenance work as needed.
- Participates in the training of apprentices and / or other workers as needed.

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend / descend ladders / stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
