Veterinary Nurse (Veterinary Technician)

Job Summary

  • Administer anesthesia to animals, under the direction of a veterinarian, and monitor animals' responses to anesthetics so that dosages can be adjusted
  • Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, serums, or treatments, as prescribed by veterinarians.
  • Monitors animal health and observes for overt signs of disease and reports any changes to supervisor and veterinary staff
  • Care for and monitor the condition of animals recovering from surgery
  • Performs euthanasia and disposes of remains and / or carcasses
  • Maintain controlled drug inventory and related log books
  • Perform laboratory tests on blood, urine, or feces, such as urinalyses or blood counts, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology or related field
  • WORK EXPERIENCE

    Required

  • 1 year of animal care experience
  • LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

    Preferred

  • RVT Registered Veterinary Technician within 1 year from date of hire
  • ALAT Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician upon date of hire
  • SKILLS

  • Working Conditions / Demands

    The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
