The Accessibility Specialist, under the direction of the Associate Director of Accessible Educational Services (AES) will assist IU Indianapolis students in matters pertaining to the quality of their education. Specifically, the position is responsible for ensuring access for students with disabilities.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Conducts intake assessments, reviews, and approves documentation of disabilities.
- Approves reasonable accommodations.
- Works with students, faculty, and staff to facilitate the implementation of approved accommodations through the interactive process.
- Preserves confidentiality regarding protected health information under federal law (HIPAA), and all discussions, issues, concerns, or problems of students requesting assistance.
- Works with campus partners regarding services that include but are not limited to grade appeals, resource referrals, classroom/faculty concerns, and navigating university policies and procedures.
- Implements AES policies related to accommodations and services related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) across the campus community.
- Delivers presentations and trainings related to the ADA, AES, and disability-related topics.
- Provides training and information regarding AES to the campus community.
- Creates digital and print communications related to AES programming and ADA initiatives.
- Facilitates AES student support programs (i.e., Peer Mentor Program).
- Proctors exams for the School of Medicine on the IU Indianapolis campus.
- Provides support and guidance to faculty in both individual and group settings regarding instructional support, pedagogical practice, classroom management, and federal regulations like FERPA and Title IX.
- Determines additional support needs through consultation and designs resources to meet educational support needs.
- Participates in educational resources initiatives in coordination with faculty and staff to improve student academic outcomes and improve classroom experience.
- Trains teaching assistants, associate instructors, and graders in grading methods, responding appropriately to student concerns, and resolving complex issues.
- Plans seminars, workshops, and other events for faculty, associate instructors, and students, as requested and appropriate by faculty.
- Advances programs from individual consultations/workshops to larger-scale transformative events/projects when appropriate.
- May oversee student testing administration and consult regularly with students regarding coordination of educational resources.
- May serve as an informational resource and/or delegate tasks to administrative staff.
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
