Promising Scholars Peer Mentors will be hired and trained to support the mission of the Promising Scholars Program (PSP). Mentors will teach skills, increase self-efficacy, and provide support and resources to first-year students in the program. The focus is on building community, academic confidence, and a strong connection to IUP. The program aims to enhance student retention, persistence, and success through personal guidance and meaningful engagement.Mentors will serve as a link between mentees and faculty, staff, campus resources, and peers to ensure a welcoming, informed, and inclusive experience for Promising Scholars participants.Training: Mentors are required to participate in training during Welcome Week, which takes place the week before the fall semester begins. This training will prepare Mentors to effectively support their assigned students and understand program expectations. Mentors will be paid for all training hours.Ongoing Responsibilities: Once the semester begins, Mentors are expected to: Meet individually or in small groups with assigned mentees at least three times during the semesterAttend regular staff meetings with PSP personnelLog interactions and progress updates after each meetingPromote and attend at least one IUP-sponsored event with mentees each semesterMentors will be compensated $15/hour for all approved training, meetings, mentoring sessions, seminars, and events. This position is only available to students with Federal Work Study (FWS) eligibility.

Requirements: Must be a current IUP studentMust be a current participant in the Promising Scholars Program (PSP)Upper-class students (2nd to 4th year students)Must demonstrate a positive attitude toward mentorship and inclusivityMinimum 2.75 cumulative GPA and good standing in both academics and student conductEligible for Federal Work Study (FWS)Essential Functions: Build and maintain consistent, professional relationships with menteesAttend and participate in staff meetings and mentor/mentee programmingShare your academic and personal growth experiences to guide menteesSupport mentees in navigating university resources and policiesRefer mentees to their Academic Advisor or other university departments when neededEncourage personal and professional development
