GENERAL SUMMARY
The High Voltage Vehicle Technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all high voltage electrical components and their operation on all IAA electric fleet vehicles. The primary maintenance/repair function of the High Voltage Vehicle Technician focuses on electrical components and systems including, but not limited to, HVAC components and systems. This position is also responsible for performing preventative, minor, and major repairs on all gasoline, diesel, and natural gas-powered vehicles and equipment. Must participate in snow removal activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs repairs, inspections, required adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication, and scheduled maintenance on all High Voltage (HV) electrical, air conditioning and heat related components in accordance with wiring diagrams, schematics, refrigeration flow diagrams, operation manuals and manufacturers maintenance recommendations and instructions.
- Ensure the vehicle is safe (by removing any high voltage safety devices and isolating high voltage wiring) to allow the vehicle to be serviced.
- Perform maintenance and repair procedures (including replacing high voltage components, such as a “3 phase Inverter”). Possess the skills, knowledge and techniques required to service, maintain, and repair vehicles fitted with high voltage batteries/components such as ‘hybrid’ or pure electric vehicles.
- Performs all preventive, scheduled and unscheduled or corrective maintenance. Troubleshoots and tests all HV vehicle systems, subsystems, and components (including HVAC systems) using precision measuring equipment such as: Multimeters (to test defective electrical equipment); and Flow meters, pressure gauges, leak detectors, vacuum pumps, pneumatic control testers and air velocity indicators (for HVAC testing); Using brazing torches and soldering irons to repair leaks in tubing and piping; and other instruments and tools as required. Regularly operates and uses special shop equipment and various tools (e.g., drills, grinders, fork trucks, hoists, cranes) while performing tasks.
- Observes HVAC and refrigeration systems and components in operation to detect potential failures or locate causes of malfunctions on HV Vehicles. Dismantles devices and removes defective parts. Inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements, and manufacturers specifications. Tests and calibrates systems and equipment to ensure proper system operations using test equipment or precision measuring instruments.
- Repairs and maintains all HV Vehicle HVAC and electrical components (e.g., circuits, wiring, starters, relays, and motors) and mechanical components (e.g., compressor valves, piston rings, condensers, evaporators, and air handling units) by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests. Removing, replacing, and repairing defective or worn parts; cleaning and lubricating components as needed.
- Assist with ensuring preventive maintenance is completed on all gasoline, diesel, and natural gas-powered equipment.
- Operate the wrecker and service truck with crane
- Fabricate metals as needed for parts
- Maintain other IAA department vehicles including snow removal vehicles
- Maintain and repair the auxiliary generators at all IAA facilities
- Ability to read, understand, and troubleshoot vehicles faults from wiring diagrams and schematics
- Ensure shuttle buses are inspected daily and vehicle fluids checked weekly
- Maintain detailed logs of inspections, maintenance, and repairs of all IAA vehicles
- Report unusual security situations to IAA Public Safety personnel
- On call from November through March for snow removal duties as required.
- Other duties and functions as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or its equivalent required; Formal trade school or an Associate’s degree in automotive, diesel or engineering program or a related field preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience as an automotive technician
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in the light or heavy vehicle sector utilizing skills, knowledge and techniques required to service, maintain, and repair vehicles such as “hybrid” or battery fully electric vehicles fitted with high voltage batteries and components (including various types of Lithium-Ion batteries) preferred.
- EPA Refrigerant Technician, ASE L3 and ASE H6 certifications preferred
- ASE certification or equivalent preferred
- Experience with Thermal King heating and air conditioning systems preferred
- Ability to troubleshoot using computers, scanners, and electrical meters
- Ability to perform all the physical and cognitive tasks outlined in the job description
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND CONDITIONS
- Valid Indiana commercial driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsements required; or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

- Work environment: This position is performed within in an inside setting most of the time. The employee will be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level varies in the outside environment. The incumbent in this position is expected to work independently and as part of the team.
