Job Summary
:

Seeking a Summer Camp Glassblowing instructor for ages youth ages 10-18 skilled in the fundamentals of sculpture and/or blowing glass as demonstrated in a portfolio of work. Applicants must be familiar in furnace glassblowing with a wide range of hand-sculpting techniques, proper tool usage, basic annealing knowledge and safe practices. We are looking for someone who is a team player, steward of a productive studio, and motivated to be part of a creative community.

The Indy Art Center Summer Art Camps emphasize the experience with the arts. Along with making original creations, campers participate in creative group activities. Camp Instructors offer young students high-quality and age-appropriate fine art instruction, encouraging creative self-expression and fostering positive risk-taking within a nurturing artistic community. The Indy Art Center believes that by participating in the creative process, young artists improve their artistic abilities, as well as their communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills. The ideal candidate will have experience working with youth, a general knowledge of various art techniques and materials, be dependable and have a positive and friendly attitude.


Job Responsibilities
:

Essential Job Functions: 1. Prepare course material within specified timelines and budget

  • Develop class lesson plans that focus on art making, art history, aesthetics, and criticism
  • Research knowledge about the art, artists, and cultures to be presented in class as necessary
  • Prepare art examples as necessary
  • Taylor courses of study by developing modifications for special needs, various levels of ability, and prior student experience
  • Use time efficiently

2. Teach students utilizing best practices from both the Art Center and Artistic Judgement

  • Implement planning through a variety of techniques including, but not limited to, discussions, projects, exhibits, visual aids, and critiques
  • Maintain a safe secure and healthy educational environment by establishing classroom behavior expectations with consistent enforcement, communicating safety information and procedures to students, and following all Art Center policies and procedures • Ensure accurate documentation of class outcomes by taking attendance, facilitating student surveying, and completing requested student documentation.
  • For youth and teen programming, maintain positive interactions with parents of students, including communicating with them about their child’s achievements or struggles

3. Manage materials in an effective and sustainable manner

  • Ensure adequate and appropriate material, supplies, tools and equipment expectations to encourage students’ full participation.
  • Clean and store all materials, equipment and studio space at the end of each class session.
  • Outreach teachers are required to transport art materials, tools, equipment, and/or student artwork to and from the art center and partner site locations.
  • Collect and prepare artwork for exhibition as necessary.

4. Be an Engaged Team member to promote personal growth and development of best practices in the Education Department

  • Attend meetings, trainings and key program events as determined by program staff • Responds to emails and approval requests in a timely manner.
  • For off- site programs, maintain positive interactions and relationships with partner site staff
  • Maintain positive interactions in promotion and retention of Art Center programs and activities
  • Actively engage in the classroom observation and annual review exercises

Additional Education/Knowledge/Skills Requirements
:

  • A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree in art or art education.
  • Experience working with diverse and underserved audiences desired; required for Outreach instructors
  • Experience working with youth for Outreach, youth/teen and art camp instructors is required
  • Classroom/behavior management experience is required for all Outreach, youth and art camp instructors.
  • Art professional experience. A personal art portfolio may be requested.
  • CPR Certification required

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Instructors are required to travel to and from the Art Center campus and/or various locations in the city.
  • Occasionally required to lift heavy objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Perform physical tasks related to the medium being taught.
  • Instructors must pass a criminal background check prior to employment.
  • This position is not a telecommute position and thus, the individual is required to work in person at the Indianapolis Art Center or Summer Art Camp Sites
  • All Team Members must pass a criminal background check prior to employment
