Summary Of Opportunity

The bilingual assistant assists English Learners in his/her assigned building with understanding academic concepts and content. The bilingual assistant also communicates with parents and staff, assists in enrollment, provides written translations and oral interpretation when required.

What You'll Do

The following outlines what your core duties and responsibilities will be for this position and provides a sample overview of what your day-to-day may look like.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to English learners who are experiencing difficulty understanding academic content.
  • Serve as a link between the school and families.
  • Interpret for any school function or meeting that requires this service.
  • Assist in the enrollment process.
  • Provide written translation of notes to parents, important information that is shared with all families.
  • Work towards building a positive self-image in English learners.
  • Help students view their culture and themselves with pride.
  • Help the school staff to be aware of and sensitive to cultural differences.
  • Work with administration, teachers, and staff to help English learners reach academic goals.
  • Be present at work.

"Day In the Life" Overview

On a regular day, as the Bilingual Assistant, you might:

  • Push into a math class and assist a small group of students working on a practice assignment
  • Translate parent phone calls
  • Meet with the ENL teacher to discuss scaffolds needed for particular students

WHAT YOU'LL BRING: SKILLS AND MINDSETS

As an ideal candidate for this role, you will be able to achieve the following:

  • Exceptional fluency and literacy in English.
  • Demonstrated fluency and literacy in an additional language.
  • Understand basic mathematical concepts and be able to explain them to students in the students' first language. Knowledge of more advanced mathematics such as algebra and geometry is necessary to work in secondary schools.
  • Be able to carry out instructions that are written, spoken or appear in diagram form.
  • Create a warm and welcoming environment for English learners and their families.
  • Collaborate and take direction from ENL and classroom teachers.

Education, Certification, And Licensure Requirements

  • Sixty semester hours; or an Associate's Degree; or successfully pass the Para Professional Assessment Exam
  • Must work under the supervision of a licensed teacher
