Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Observe all traffic laws, safety regulations, policies and procedures regarding school buses in accordance with Federal, State and local government agencies, and the LaPorte Community School District.
- Maintains and implements the established rules and procedures for transportation services.
- Completes daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and submits repair orders as necessary.
- Follow assigned route(s) and adhere to set schedules (includes field trips and special activities).
- Maintains appropriate student management and reports student incidents to the appropriate supervisor(s).
- Assigns specific seating for students accordingly.
- Communicate with department personnel, school personnel and parents about student's bus behavior in a professional manner.
- Instructs students on bus safety rules, procedures and practices.
- Keeps assigned bus clean by daily sweeping.
- Keep assigned bus fueled at all times.
- Provide information required to mechanics in order to schedule routine preventive maintenance for the assigned bus.
- Properly operates all communication equipment and maintains professionalism at all times while using the radio system.
- Conducts bus evacuation drills in accordance with approved procedure.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage and student injuries should they occur.
- Participates in required random drug/alcohol testing program.
- Complete and submit all required reports and documentation.
- Maintains a neat, clean and professional appearance.
- Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.
- Maintains high level of confidentiality at all times.
- The Director of Transportation according to specific needs will make task assignments for this position. The administration may have additional input in identifying other preferred qualifications and/or appropriate duties that may exceed those described which are consistent with the function of a Bus Driver.
- Accepts other directives from the Director of Transportation and the Superintendent that serve to improve services to the students and patrons of the LaPorte Community School District and are required for the successful operation of the LaPorte Community Schools Transportation Department.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Possess and maintain a valid CDL License with all required school bus endorsements.
- Possess and maintain a valid Department of Transportation physical certificate. May be required to have TB test on yearly basis.
- Possess and maintain a valid State of Indiana School Bus Certification (Yellow) Card.
- Working knowledge of the corporation's geographic layout and boundaries.
- Able to work with and understand children.
- Confidentiality, trustworthy, self-motivated, attentive to details and have the ability to work efficiently and patiently under pressure and stressful conditions.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism at all times.
- Able to quickly analyze a situation and communicate timely solutions.
- Demonstrate well-developed communication skills both verbal and written, necessary to interact in a professional manner to project a positive image that is consistent with LaPorte Community School District's philosophy.
- Willingness to improve and/or develop job-related skills.
- Excellent work habits, attendance record and must successfully complete and pass all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
- Shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation and must participate in the mandatory random drug/alcohol testing program.
- Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of standing, walking, sitting, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (25 pounds or more) as well as use of hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
