ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned by the Transportation Director
- Drives a school bus safely, proficiently, and professionally while maintaining a timely schedule
- Enjoys working with children of all ages and abilities
- Maintains appropriate student behavior by enforcing transportation rules and works with Principals and the Transportation Director to issue consequences in order to maintain a positive and safe bus environment
- Responsible for the general cleanliness of the bus being used for a route or extracurricular activities
- Properly performs and completes daily pre-trip bus inspections as well as any general preventive maintenance as required and notifies the maintenance personnel of any problems or safety issues with the vehicle
- Checks the bus thoroughly at the end of each route and any activity where students were transported to make sure the bus is empty
- Maintains an above-average driving record by complying with all traffic laws, rules, regulations
- Interacts and communicates professionally and respectfully with students, parents, coworkers, and school personnel
- Follows the appropriate dress code as outlined in the employee handbook
- Responsible to use and enforce the use of all safety equipment onboard the bus including the use of seat belts (driver and passengers) and participating in bus evacuation drills
- Is familiar with medically at-risk students and their needs that ride the bus
- Complies with Corporation Bylaws, Policies, Directives, and Regulations as outlined in the Non-Certified and Transportation Handbooks
- Models Corporation Mission Statement and Fundamental Objectives
- Maintains satisfactory attendance
- Responsible for fueling your assigned bus and maintaining a safe fuel tank reserve
- Participates in all mandatory training and meetings
- Practices and maintains the confidentiality of student information
- Assures students riding in wheelchairs, safety seats, and/or seat belts are properly and safely secured (Special Education drivers only)
- Assures any medical equipment that may accompany a student is properly and safely secured (Special Education drivers only)
- Supervises students and maintains general discipline on the bus. If needed, follows up with appropriate school personnel according to corporation policy
EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- At least 21 years old
- Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License, Class B with Air Brake, Passenger, and School Bus endorsements
- Complete the IDOE Pre-service Certification course and the Annual Safety Meeting course to obtain and maintain a Yellow Card Standard Certification
- Participate in random drug testing and adhere to the SCS Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Policy for CDL employees
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.
- Ability to work in a friendly and cooperative manner with co-workers, students, and school personnel
- Ability to read and understand maps
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral, written, and electronic form
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and policies
- Ability to perform duties in a positive and professional manner
- Ability to use bus-mounted tablets and applications associated with the job
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and drive a large passenger vehicle
- The employee is required to walk or stand
- The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job
- The employee frequently repeats the same hand, arm, or finger motion many times
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 deg. and below 32 deg. and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces
- The noise level in the work environment can be loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
