POSITION TITLE: SCHOOL BUS DRIVER
REPORTS: Principal(s) and Superintendent
JOB GOAL: To ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students on an assigned route to/from school. To operate a school bus to transport students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.
Performance Responsibilities
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent, pass a pre-employment physical including a drug screen, current CDL with proper endorsements for driving a school bus.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret transportation manuals, corporation materials, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from administrators, faculty, parents, or other school corporation employees.
OTHER SKILLS: Must be 21 years of age, ability to pass physical examination to operate bus, ability to pass alcohol and drug test, ability to complete required annual bus driver safety training, ability to maintain order and manage student behavior while operating the bus, available should school be delayed/dismissed early, demonstrated history of safe driving, valid Indiana commercial driver's license (class B).

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance use at school or any school function, and remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

Performance Responsibilities
- Follow assigned bus route and adhere to established schedules.
- Transport only authorized students and discharge students only at authorized stops.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Perform assigned pre-trip inspection of the bus to check for mechanical defects before each operation and notify the bus mechanic of needed repairs.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures using appropriate form and communication.
- Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
- Supervise students and enforce safety procedures while they board, ride, and exit the bus.
- Maintain order and discipline on the bus.
- Enforce policies and rules for students riding the bus.
- Communicate with building administrators and parents regarding student behavior while on the bus.
- Walk the bus after each run or field trip to check for any students left on the bus.
- Instruct students on safe riding and emergency evacuation rules and regulations.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the bus route.
- Complete all required licensure exams and training to maintain driver certification.
- Comply with all provisions of the drug and alcohol testing of CDL license holders.
- Regular, punctual attendance is expected.
- Shall adhere to the School Board policies and procedures.
- In the event of a predetermined absence (at least one day in advance), obtain a substitute driver from the approved list if unable to drive. Notify the office prior to the absence, including name of the substitute driver.
- Complete other driver-related training and tasks as assigned by supervisor(s).
