SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Under the direction of the school principal, provide instruction in Culinary Arts to high school students interested in this pathway.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

The following outlines what your core duties and responsibilities will be for this position and provides a sample overview of what your day-to-day may look like.


CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum covering various aspects of culinary arts, including food preparation, cooking techniques, baking, and kitchen safety.
  • Instruct students in the proper use of kitchen tools and equipment, emphasizing safety and sanitation practices.
  • Teach students how to read and follow recipes, measure ingredients, and understand cooking terminology.
  • Guide students through hands-on cooking and baking exercises, allowing them to practice and refine their skills.
  • Organize and supervise student-run events, such as school catering projects or pop-up restaurants, to provide real-world culinary experience.
  • Assess student performance through practical exams, culinary projects, and written assessments, providing constructive feedback.
  • Manage and maintain the culinary classroom and kitchen, ensuring all equipment is in good working order and supplies are stocked.
  • Collaborate with local culinary professionals and organizations to align the curriculum with industry standards and provide students with networking opportunities.
  • Prepare students for industry-recognized certifications, such as ServSafe, to enhance their employability in the foodservice industry.
  • Foster essential soft skills, such as teamwork, time management, and customer service, that are crucial for success in the culinary field.


"DAY IN THE LIFE" OVERVIEW

On a regular day as a Culinary Arts teacher, you might:

  • Start the day by prepping the kitchen classroom, setting up workstations, and gathering ingredients and tools for the day's lessons.
  • Conduct a morning class, combining theoretical instruction on culinary techniques with live demonstrations, such as knife skills or baking methods.
  • Guide students through hands-on cooking exercises, providing personalized feedback and ensuring adherence to safety and sanitation protocols.
  • Oversee lunchtime service projects, where students apply their skills in a real-world setting, such as preparing meals for a school event or running a student-operated café
  • End the day by assessing student progress, cleaning and organizing the kitchen, and planning the next day's lessons and activities.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must possess the following credentials and be willing to become dual credit credentialed. NRAEF ServSafe certification is preferred.


  • Minimum requirement: Associate degree or higher.
  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Employment in an accredited educational program to teach in a specific vocational area. If working through the Department of Corrections, the applicant must submit a letter on DOC letterhead indicating that employment will occur if license is obtained.


  • Occupational experience** (Select one):
  • 5,000 hours (about 2.5 years of experience) in the last five (5) years.
  • 4,000 hours (about 2 years) in the past ten (10) years and demonstration of occupational competency test.
  • 4,000 hours (about 2 years) in the past ten (10) years and evidence of occupational licensure or occupational proficiency based on approved regional, state, or national board training and evaluation.
  • 4,000 hours (about 2 years) in the past ten (10) years and completion of an accredited 2-year or higher degree in the specific certification area
  • 4,000 hours (about 2 years) in the past ten (10) years and completion of an apprenticeship or internship program.


  • **Note: All occupational experience must be verified by submitting letters from current or former employees specifying and considering the following:
  • job titles and duties;
  • hours worked per week;
  • starting/ ending dates;
  • the name and title of the employer;
  • must be on company letterhead;
  • only work experience in the certification area will be accepted;
  • verification for self-employed: Submit the Profit/Loss statements from the federal income tax returns.


FLSA CLASSIFICATION:

This is a full-time, exempt position.


ELIGIBILTIY FOR REMOTE WORK:

This position is not eligible for remote work.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
: No direct supervisory responsibilities for adults, but is expected to carry out supervisory responsibilities related to monitoring student behavior and activities both in and out of classroom during the assigned working day and on learning excursions.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


REASONING ABILITY
: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must hold a CTE Health Occupations license or be eligible for a Workplace Specialist License in any CTE Health Science area.
