Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. Past work experience performing food handling and warehouse activities in a zoo, aquarium, or similar institution is desirable. At least one (1) year of food handling is required. This is a part-time, 20-25 hours per week position with a primary schedule of Monday-Friday. Some weekend or evening hours may be required due to peak season demands.
Requirements and responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Daily food preparation, including special diet mixes, and assistance with commissary related pick-ups and deliveries, both on and off zoo grounds.
- Responsible for receiving all food products from vendors; checking packing lists against products received; and inspecting food items for damage, and / or quality.
- Assists with proper unloading, storage, and arrangement of all produce, including rotation of these items to ensure freshness.
- Maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of commissary food preparation and storeroom areas including counters, refrigerators, freezers, floors, and equipment.
- Consults with Nutrition Center Area Manager on animal diets and special diet mixes.
- Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
- Exposure to work indoors and outdoors, under all environmental conditions, including inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, humidity, and food freezer.
- Ability to ascend / descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Indiana driver's license insurable by the Zoo.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a closely related discipline is preferred.
