Job Description

The Opportunity : The University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications invites applications for the Knight Chair in Journalism and Technology. We are seeking journalism professionals with extensive experience working at the intersection of technology, innovation, and the future of journalism. This is an opportunity to do groundbreaking work developing actionable ideas to help journalism survive and thrive in a next technological age. The position is tenurable upon hire subject to Provost and Board of Trustees Approval.

The Knight Chair will be a leader both for the College and in the national discussion about journalism technology, especially emerging issues regarding AI, social media, mis / disinformation, and the role of journalism in a democracy. The Chair will be an advocate for exploring the technological advances that will benefit our students and the industry at large.

A successful candidate will have experience in one or more of these areas :

  • Interactive journalism
  • Artificial intelligence and other technology as reporting, data analysis, and / or engagement tools
  • User experience
  • Content design or a similar related field

To fulfill these expectations, the ideal candidate will :

  • Conduct public scholarship, outreach, instruction, and / or training focused on issues involving journalism and technology;
  • Teach courses in emerging technologies that journalism students will use not only to present information but to better understand how technology can support audience engagement and community-connected journalism.
  • The chair will teach two courses per semester with an emphasis on advanced skill development in their areas of specialty and that fit into the Department of Journalism's curriculum. That assignment could include collaboration with the Innovation News Center, the College's immersive experience for journalism students.

    Outside the classroom, the Knight Chair will be expected to conduct professional outreach based on the candidate's skills, interest, and experience. Activities could include professional training for journalists nationally and globally; publishing analysis or reported pieces in news media or other public-facing publications; presenting and lecturing to stakeholders, including journalism and academic organizations.

    The College values collaboration and would expect the Knight Chair to work closely with internal stakeholders, such as the Consortium on Trust in Media and Technology and the Brechner Center for the Advancement of the First Amendment.

    Minimum Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7 years of professional experience with evidence of work in emerging technology.
  • Evidence of thought or professional leadership at the intersection of journalism and technology.
  • Evidence of ability to teach or coach early-career journalists.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Work with artificial intelligence in professional journalism environments.
  • Master's degree
  • 10 years of professional experience
  • Evidence of ability to teach or coach early-career journalists
